The 2005-2006 season of Italian football club S.S. Lazio continued the relative success the club had been enjoying for the past two years due to the actions of Delio Rossi as manager and Tommaso Rocchi's success as a player. However, Lazio got involved in the Italian football scandal, where president Claudio Lotito was found guilty for trying to persuade referees to judge in Lazio's favour, following a few decisions Lotito found unfair. Initially, Lazio was thrown out of Serie A along with Fiorentina and Juventus, but unlike Juventus, both clubs were able to win an appeal to stay in Serie A, which also meant Lotito's five-year ban from football was terminated.
Season
Prior to the scandal, Lazio had done a season worthy of Roberto Mancini's last year as coach back in 2003-04. New coach Delio Rossi did not get much money to spend on the transfer-market, but players such as Cribari and Valon Behrami performing better than expected in their first seasons. More significantly was that Goran Pandev got his breakthrough, while players such as Tommaso Rocchi, Angelo Peruzzi, Massimo Oddo, Luciano Zauri and Fabio Liverani played at their peaks.
Lazio scored 62 points from 38 league matches, but even without the penalties, it was twelve points away from fourth-placed Fiorentina. Thanks to the decision that kept the club in Serie A, it could start the 2006-07 season with a small points deficit, plus Cristian Ledesma as a worthy replacement for departured Liverani.
