S.S. Lazio only just renewed its Serie B contract following another nightmare season for the recent stable Serie A club. It got convicted for match-fixing in the summer of 1986, forcing it to start the season with ten minus points, and even though its form on the pitch had been good enough to fight for promotion, it instead only just escaped relegation, with a late goal by Giuliano Fiorini against Lanerossi Vicenza meaning the teams swapped places. It then won a relegation tiebreaker against Campobasso, having lost against Taranto. The victory was enough to plut Lazio in the second position of the group, ensuring it survived in Serie B after all.
