In the 1964 United States presidential election, Alabama was the only state in which the Democratic Party nominee, President Lyndon B. Johnson did not appear on the ballot. This was also the third time when a Republican nominee carried Alabama, a state which had voted for the Democratic nominee since Reconstruction.
Despite Johnson's landslide victory that year (he won, to date, the highest percentage of the popular vote – 61.1%), he also lost to Goldwater four other Southern states, earlier solidly Democratic - Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Georgia.
