Sy Smith & Mark de Clive-Lowe concert chronology |
Sy Smith & Mark de Clive-Lowe Tour was the concert tour by American singer-songwriter Sy Smith and DJ/music producer Mark de Clive-Lowe in support to her fourth studio album Fast and Curious.
Background
The shows included songs from Smith's Conflict and The Syberspace Social albums and at some shows she included cover songs from singers Michael Jackson, Groove Armada, and Nelly. Several songs were also made up on stage and were never recorded or planned by the duo. Songs likes "Super Sy" and "I Want Your Love" were performed by Sy Smith outside of the tour (during her own shows), but never made the final cut of associated album Fast and Curious. The same setlist was never repeated throughout the tour.
The tour began in Atlanta, Georgia, at Spread Love. During the show, Smith premiered the performance of her new single "Truth". Throughout the tour, Smith and Clive-Lowe paid tribute to Michael Jackson by performing "Stranger In Moscow", "I Want You Back", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "I Can't Help It", and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin".[1] In January 2011, Smith performed Lovergirl in tribute to Teena Marie who died in December of the previous year.
The toured came to a brief halt when Smith was offered to tour with The Foreign Exchange during the European leg of the tour. Smith accepted and joined them for remainder of their worldwide tour.
In mid-2011, Smith announced that she would be doing several shows with Mark de Clive-Lowe again. In July 2011, the tour resumed slowly at Angel's Piano Bar in Santa Monica, LA. Five more shows were booked due to Smith who was still touring The Foreign Exchange.
Critical reception
The Kexp Blog's Dan Digs was impressed with the high energy Clive-Lowe showed during the performance stating, "Every element of Mark’s uniquely funky, future-facing sonic output weaves together perfectly in time, including his head that bounces up and down to the music with the precision of a German yo-yo sandbagged behind a wall of flashing keyboard racks." Digs went on to give Smith praise, "Over relentless broken beats and synth bassline grooves, Smith’s powerful and impressive vocals are never a note out of place as she sings and interpolates lines from club and hip hop classics such as “I See You Baby” by Groove Armada and Nelly’s “Hot In Herre."[1]
