Mera Naam Yousuf Hai(Urdu: میرا نام یوسف ہے‎) (Urdu: دیار دل‎ ; lit. My Name is Yousuf) previously titled as Zulaikha Bina Yusuf[1][2] is a Pakistani television drama serial, that originally aired on the A-Plus Entertainment from March 17, 2015, to October 27, 2015, comprising a total of 20 episodes. Mera Naam Yousuf Hai follows a Forbidden Love Story of Yousuf and Zulaikha. The story is told in a heavily serialised manner. It faces a love triangle between characters Yousuf, Zulaikha and Madiha, features a mothers love for her daughters, a fathers hatred, a loves sacrifice, and the pain for love.

Mera Naam Yousuf Hai stars Maya Ali[3] and Imran Abbas Naqvi[4] as the title characters Zulaikha and Yusuf, respectively. And star Hina Khawaja Bayat, Waseem Abbas, Behroze Sabzwari, Mizna Waqas and Mansha Pasha in recurring roles.

Series was Produced by Saadia Jabbar, and aired on A-plus entertainment as part of a night programming of 20:00. The series is loosely based on the story "Yusuf and Zulaikha" by Jami in his book Haft Awrang. It was written by Khalil-Ur-Rehman Qamar[4][5] directed by Mehreen Jabbar[6] and directed by Mehreen Jabbar.[6] Mera Naam Yousuf Hai premiered in Pakistan on March 6, 2015, with prime slot on Fridays[7]

In September 2015, the series was taken by Indian market, Star India private limited decided to begin its airing on October 19, 2015 on there channel Star Plus-thus becoming the channel's first ever Pakistani drama. The series was aired in India, UAE, USA, Ireland, UK, Austria, Europe, Canada and Latin America. Series received extravagant reception in viewership and ratings.[8][9]

Synopsis

The Story revolves around a forbidden love of Yousuf and Zulaikha. Yousuf saw Zulaikha in a train for the very first time and is unable to get her out of his mind. Zulaikha on the other hand, considered the moment as a momentary attraction as she is stuck between her cousins marriage proposals, masked by the personal interests of her parents. She bumps into Yousuf several times who is evidently in love with her and is expressive about his feelings for her. Later, Noor Muhammad, Zulaikha's Father announces her marriage with Imran Moeez (his nephew) so he himself can marry Imran's Aunt Bushra. At this moment Yousuf crosses every single limit to prove his love to Zulaikha so she can deny marring Imran. Story takes turn when Yousuf is increasingly being tortured by the police upon Noor Muhammad's orders, at this point Zulaikha becomes aware that his love was always true for her. Looking to this Zulaikha eventually falls in love with Yousuf. Afiya Begum, Zulaikha's mother and Hajira, Zulaikha's sister then start to support her to marry Yousuf while Noor Muhammad starts threatening them, he however marries with Bushra successfully. Story shows women power against Noor and shows how the three women team up. Later, a hidden past is revealed to Yousuf and Zulaikha conveying that both are not made for each other and separation is in their destiny, despite this both show reluctance and tend to name their love, the two faced equal tortures. The Story is penned on the challenges, tortures and sacrifices they face for their love, and shows how Afiya protects her daughter's from their father, and survives all his tortures.[5][10][11][12]

Production

Development

Mera Naam Yousaf Hai was developed by producer Sadia Jabbar of Sadia Jabbar Productions, she hired successful director Mehreen Jabbar to direct the series. The Show is written by famous writer Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar,[4] the show is loosely based on the story of Yusuf and Zulaikha by Jami in his book Haft Awrang with few edits, Screenplay is also written by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar while Script composing is done by Naman Ali. Approximately with twenty one episodes, Zulaikha Bina Yousuf was completed in February 2015 and was all set to premier on 12 March 2015 with a prime slot of Thursday 8:00pm.[13] However, in Mid-March 2015 promotional team gave the show a new title Mera Naam Yousuf Hai and changed its premier to 6 March 2015. Song composition is done by Sultan Athor while the OST given by Saad Sultan. The show aired weekly episode for 35 - 40 (without commercials) minutes every Friday to July 18, 2015.

Casting

Producer Sadia Jabbar choose, Imran Abbas Naqvi and Maya Ali to play the leading roles of Yusuf and Zulaikha respectively. Imran Abbas[14][15] joined the shoot. Maya Ali was selected to role for the character of Zulaikha. Actors like Mansha Pasha, Waseem Abbas, Behroze Sabzwari, Hina Khawaja Bayat and Seema Seher were selected to role for Madiha, Noor Muhammad, Waji Ahmed, Afiya and Hajira respectively

Filming

The filming of drama serial begin in September/October 2014 and was completed in late January 2015.[16] under the title Zulaikha Bina Yousuf.[16] Zulaikha Bina Yousuf was officially announced to premier on 12 March 2014 with Thursday 8:00pm as a prime slot.[2] On 2 March 2015 it was announced that the title is changed to Mera Naam Yousauf hai with Friday 8:00pm as a prime slot, the premier was then decided to be launched during 6 May 2015.[7]

1 Story starts by showing Yousuf who just travelled to Karachi and has come to his friend's house; he tells him about his travelling. He tells him that he had accidentally entered a train after missing his actually one, luckily this train was taking him to the same place. He sees Zulaikha and is unable to keep his eyes away from her, he finds out that she is the daughter of a Maulvi and her father is very strict on his daughters, he tells Yousuf to jump out of the train on the next station. When the train approaches the next station, Zulaikha along with her sister Hajira gets out of it for a walk and Yousuf after looking that she is away from her dad, asks her if her name was Zulaikha she denies and leaves. It is told that Yousuf is a singer and believes that one day he would change his destiny. 2 Imran Mughees is Zulaikha's cousin whom she fully dislikes because of his character. Zulaikha's mother tells her that if she wants to reject Imran Mughees, she must marry her other cousin Ali Hamza who is Afia's nephew. Now Zulaikha is stuck between these two proposals and wants to get out of them. Yousuf comes to Zulaikha's door. He says that he is a postman and has a parcel for Zulaikha, when she comes to the door she recognises him just when Yousuf tell her his name. 3 Afiya invites her sister (Ali Hamza's mother) to live with them for ten days, the real purpose is to bring the marriage proposal which Noor Muhammad denies verbally. On the other hand, its told that Yousuf's friends's (Taji's) sister Madiha has hidden feelings for him and calls him on phone which Yousuf dislikes, she tells him that she is his friend and he can share any thing with her, verbally aware of the truth Yousuf tells her that he loves Zulaikha and she must take convince her, deeply hurt Madiha agrees. Zulaikha and Yusuf both dream about each other. Yousuf's mother listens to him talking to his friend and is now aware of his love interest. She tells his father who asks him about Zulaikha, Yousuf ignores the conversation and flies it as a joke. Zulaikha's father asks her about her choice of wedding, he yells and questions her just then Zulaikha denies both the proposals and says that she would marry whom she wants and according to her religion she is given full permission.[21] 35:25 March 20, 2015 64,200[22]
4 Yousuf asks Madiha to talk to Zulaikha for himl, Madiha realises that if she has true feelings than she must sacrifice which she does by meeting Zulaikha. She acts as if she is her childhood friend and meets her unaware of the truth, Zulaikha's family thinks that she is true but she secretly tells Zulaikha that she is only here for Yousuf. Zulaikha gets angry and asks her to leave. Madiha gets to know that she is getting married to Imran Moeez, she then tells this to Yousuf who breaks down.[23] 37:28 March 27, 2015 75,800[24]
5 The episode starts showing Yosuf talking to Daji. Daji asks him to go to Zulaikh's house and talk to her. Madiha guides Yousuf to Zulaikha's room. On the other hand, Maulvi Noor Muhammad is planning to get married to Bushra (Imran Moezz's aunt),as he was in love with her before his marriage. Tony leads Yousuf to the terrace. Yousuf climbs the terrace, and jumps into Zulaikh's room, Zulaikha gets angry, Hajra's reaction is very different from Zulaikha .Yousuf says that if her marriage is love marriage then no one will be able to stop it. Zulaikha asks him to leave, he gives Zulaikha his number. He then leaves her room. When he is about to jump back, Noor Muhammad sees him and Tajee. 6 Yousuf tells Madiha about what happened between his conversation, Hajra tells Zulekha that if she wants to stay away from Ali Hamza, she (Hajra) can fool him that she is in love with him. Zulekha's Aunt is impressed by Hajra's new Behaviour towards them. Zulekha and Hajra Secretly meet Imran Moezz, Zulekha tells him that she doesn't want to marry him and tells him to break off the marriage. On the way home Yousaf and Daji meets Imran and beat him hard. Daji checks Madiha's mobile phone and is aware now of her conversations. Zulekha when arrives home. Noor Muhammad narrates her about the entire story and blames her for this, Zulekha faints. Daji is caught by police men, he is beaten hard by police but he still lies to them that he doesn't know Yousaf at all. Madiha informs Yousaf about the news who reaches to rescue Dajee, Maulvi Noor Muhammad along with Imran Moeez reaches to torture them both. They start to record the situation on their phone and Youaf tells them that he only loves Zulekha and is ready to suffer any sort of torture. 7 Yousaf is injured badly and released from the prison along with Daji, Madiha starts to get worried and makes soup for both, Zulekha calls her and asks about Yousaf's condition she tells her not to tell to Yousaf about this conversation. Zulekha has now began to taunt Noor Muhammad like her Mother Afiya does because of which Afiya now is proud of her. 8 Dajee Upon checking Madiha's mobile is now aware of the soft corner she has for Yousaf, he asks if she is in love with him or not, Madiha denies after which he tells her that his Love is only for Zulekha. Noor Muhammad is increasingly reminding every one about the marriage and says that it is scheduled to be on Sunday. Zulekha calls Madiha and tells her that if Yousaf breaks of her marriage she would then fall in love with him, Madiha hides the fact from Yousaf, she later dreams of Yousaf being shot by Wali and Noor Muhammad and is now increasingly worried.[30] 35:07 April 24, 2015
9 Episodes starts with showing Madiha and Dajee talking about Zulekha's marriage, Umair (One of Zulekha's neighbour) tells them about the marriage. He tells Dajee that Nikkah is now scheduled on Friday but Ruksati will take place on Sunday helpless and injured Yousaf now has no choice but to face the consequences, Zulakha gets ready in bridal form and is nervously waiting for Yousaf, Noor Muhammad calls Imran Moeez to ask where he is after which he tells him that he would never marry Zulekha, the marriage hence is postponed. In reality he was kidnapped by Yousaf, Dajee and Madiha and was told that he is spoiling a love story, he promises that he will never marry her and calls Noor Muhammad telling him that he has promised is God to call of the marriage and tells him that he can marry Hajra which Noor Muhammad denies.[31] 37:48 May 1, 2015
10 Dajee and Yousuf release Imran Moeez on the condition that he would never open his mouth in front of any one, reaching home he acts as if he does not know Noor Muhammad which makes Noor Muhammad more angry, Zulekha and Yousuf meet each other in a restaurant, Zulekha tells Yousuf that if he wants to marry her, he has to send a proper marriage proposal for her. That night Imran Moeez is beaten by Noor Muhammad and he accidentally tells him the real propose for the kidnapping, it is also revealed that Afiya is aware of Noor Muhammad extra martial affair thinking that she would never let Noor Muhammad win. The next day Noor Muhamnmad along with Wali (Zulekha's brother) sends a police force to Dajee's house. Zulakha calls Yousuf and tells him to run away she hears the police sound and starts crying hence Yousuf is now aware that she has love for him.[32] 36:55 May 8, 2015
11 Zulekha shows reluctance that she would never even dare to marry Imran Moeez hence bothering her father, Ali Hamza along with his mother has left. Their Yousuf is tortured badly and still commits that he loves Zulekha. Dajee before has run away after Yousuf pleases him and Madiha is living with Yousuf's family until things are fully sorted. Yousuf's parents go to Zulekha's home for the marriage proposal when they meet Zulekha they are impressed by her and are hence proud of Yousuf's choice. When Afiya approaches, she and Wali Ahmed (Yousuf's father) are shocked to see each other. The proposal breaks off and a dark past is revealed that Afiya and Waji Ahmed wanted to marry each other and were class mates, but unfortunately Noor Muhammad married Afiya to spoil her life and the same happened to her which Zulekha is going through hence this is the reason why she wants Zulekha to disobey his father is such conditions, it is also told as Noor Muhammad spoiled her life she wants his life to be ruined promising herself that she would never let him marry Buhra. Madiha visits Zulakha's home begging to leave Yousuf, Zulekha proves her how both of them are spending their lives in depression. 12 Sequences show that Yousuf is being physically tortured at police station and Zulekha is being verbally tortured at her home, Yousuf's mother tells him about the dark past and asks her to leave Zulaikha. 13 Episode starts with Yousuf who is surprised to learn that he was released upon Noor Muhammad's orders, he asks Waji Ahmed hoe this happened and comes to know that Zulaikha has sacrificed herself for him, listening to this Yousuf breaks down. Zulaikha on the other hand tells Afiya that she has sold herself for Yousuf's love and admits that she loves him. It is revealed that Noor Muhammad wanted Zulaikha to marry Imran so he himself can marry Bushra (Imran's Aunt) Afiya's dark past makes it obvious that Noor Muhammad's second marriage is her biggest defeat. Noor decides to stay in Kausar Parveen's house and asks Imran to take Zulaikha from his house, Zulaikha tells him to send Noor Muhammad back or she would divorce him, she further calls Kausar Parveen and tells her to do the same, Kausar lies to Noor Muhammad that she had sweated her upon which Noor Muhammad beats Zulaikha. Zulaikha stays firm and teams up with Afiya and Hajra laughing in front of Noor Muhammad who challenges them to marry Bushra on his own, Zulaikha further says that during his Nikkah that second dilatation would be of divorce, Noor Muhammad raises his hand while Afiya pushes him back.[35] 37:47 May 29, 2015
14 Zulaikha is tortured by Noor Muhammad, he leaves and goes to Kauser challenging Aliya to make Zulaikh's Rukhsati and his own Nikkah. Afiya tells Zulaikha that she was once in the same state as she is and tells her to run away before Noor Muhammad approaches. Wali is unaware of Noor Muhammad's Affair, Noor lies to him about Bushra and asks him to forcefully bring Zulaikha to Kausar's house where he is waiting. Wali reaches home with the entire police force, Afiya successfully makes Zulaikha's escape, Zulaikha approaches Tony who takes her to Yousuf. Hajira on the other hand claimed her to be Zulaikha, she covers her face and tearfully leaves confronting Afiya. 15 Hajira is bought back to Afiya by Noor Muhammad, he swears that he will bring Zulaikha back. The Next day Yousuf, on his bike takes Zulaikha to a layer and after visiting the court Zulaikha's divorce case from Imran Moeez in filed. Noor Muhammad goes to Yousuf's home and finds out that Yosusf is Waji Ahmed's Son, and leaves. On their way back Yousuf and Zulaikha are stuck between Noor Muhammad's goons led by Wali and Imran. Yousuf fights for Zulaikha ending up himself being beaten, Zulaikha then strokes a rock on Imran's head who gained every ones attention. After this she helps Yousuf to stand through her support and rushes, the two escape with goons chasing them, after few goons caught them Yousuf hits them and the two are finally successful. Yousuf is now sully sure that Zulaikha loves him. Later Madiha visits Yousuf and Zulaikha and upon Waji Ahmed's insisting she stays there with Zulaikha and Mahrukh for a day. 38:00 June 12, 2015
16 Madiha and Tajee insist Zulaikha to live with them for protection, when Waji Ahmed and Yousuf to ask her she agrees. Madiha introduces Zulaikha to her house and both try to bond, Zulaikha is suspicious on her that she once loved Yousuf. Later, Noor Muhammad, and Wali bring their goons at Tajee's home and forcefully beat them, Zulaikha then asks Noor to stop selling her which leads him to raise his hand, Zulaikha faints and is taken back, Madiha informs Hajira about this. 37:50 June 19, 2015
17 Zulaika is tied chain and is tortured, while Yousuf is tortured by the police, it is shown that both of them faced torture and are helpless, Zulaikha swears in front of Kausar Paveen that she will both let this go easily. Noor Muhammad finally Bushra and promises to gift him a three lac rupee cheque. Afiya slaps Wali and tells him to get out of her house. Wali feels guilty for his doings. Madiha took care of yousuf in hospital, looking to her Yousuf's mother asks her to confront her love in front of them, Madiha says that she does not love Yousuf as she knows that he is only for Zulaikha. It is revealed that it was Tajee who helped Noor Muhammad to find Zulaikha's location. Kausar gets irked looking at Imraan supporting Zulaikha. 37:00 June 26, 2015
18 Imraan starts supporting Zulaikha and objects Kausar to end her fight which brooke out only for a momentary comment of Afiya. Kausar Parveen gets Irked. Imraan leaves Zulaikha to her home and goes back. Zulaikha is now separated from him. Wali took away Noor Muhammad's entire money, property, and left overs and moved to Dubai, Afiya finds out few documents proving Noor Muhammad wrong. Noor Muhammad is shocked to hear about his money being taken and gets worried. Zulaikha tells Hajra that nothing happened in her wedding night and flashbacks prove that Zulaikha accused Kausar for destroying her family, and Imraan felt guilty, which made him to support her. 38:00 July 3, 2015
19 Zulaikha narrates her first wedding experience with Imraan to Hajira. Yousuf Proposes to Madiha, Madiha declines. Imraan leaves to Dubai divorcing Zulaikha. Noor asks Afiya about Wali and she replies that he has left his father. She takes her daughters and leaves, and start living in a new apartment. Yousuf takes Madiha on a dinner. 20 Zulaikha starts a job, she finds out that she is working on Waji Ahmed's office who comes to know of his divorce. Yousuf insists Madiha to marry him, Madiha says that she will only agree if Zulaikha will sit next to her. Waji Ahmed visits Zulaikha, he narrates his entire past with Afiya to Zulaikha telling her that he is spending his life in depression. Afiya, Hajra and Waji insist Zulaikha to marry Yousuf but Zulaikha declines. Yousuf starts a job and starts getting high income, he finally accepts his step-mother and tends to move on. Madiha and Yousuf's marriage function starts, Zulaikha and Hajra attends. By the time of Nikkah, when Yousuf is asked to declare his acceptance, he repeats two times, when he is about to announce it the third time, Zulaikha faints, Yousuf gets worried, when she gains conscious she found herself in the hospital. She is shocked when asked for Nikkah declaration, Madiha and Afiya insist and she finally accepts. Yousuf and Zulaikha are now married and Madiha happily moves on. 40:44 July 17, 2015

The theme songs were Saad Sultan and were performed by singers like Rizwan Anwar, Saad Sultan himself and Umair Ahmed. It was written by the composing team itself. The lines of the song are frequently used during the course of the show. The music video was released In March 2015.

Reception

Critical appreciation

Sadaf Siddiqui of Dawn News states that Mera Naam Yousuf Hai is off to a smooth start[36] in her issue she praised Writer's story line stating Writer Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar’s pen aspires to the tragic, the epic, and the unusual, and as his previous drama Pyare Afzal has shown, in some cases it succeeds she also praised Mehreen Jabbar as director stating Director Mehreen Jabbar managed to keep Khalil sahib’s flair for drama under her subtle control. She hasn't let the dialogue overpower the narrative. It helps that the drama's production values are excellent as is the visual story telling with hints at the character's inner lives.[36] She lauded Maya Alli, Imran Abbas Naqvi and Hina Khawaja Bayat's role by saying Maya Ali’s restrained performance as Zulekha proves she's a director’s actor and so far Mehreen Jabbar has guided her well. Imran Abbas, who seems perennially youthful, also, pardon the pun, strikes a chord as the dreamer Yousuf. But if there was an actor who stole the spotlight today, it has to be Hina Khwaja Bayat.[36]

Siddiqui, on her other issue praised the shows plot and melodrama stating "TV drama Mera Naam Yousuf Hai plays the filmi card and wins. She further added that It isn't merely filmi in the sense that it features over-the-top melodrama; there are also a fair number of larger-than-life events to contend with. These events aren’t just plot points pushing the story forward, they're like cogs in a vast machine that represent the characters' interconnected, messy lives. [37] She commented on Khalil-Ur-Rehman Qamar's screenplay stating that Khalil sahib’s script brings into question society’s hypocrisies and double standards, as well as the different roles, expectations and allowances for men and women. She also praised Mehreen Jabbar's directory saying It is quite commendable that despite all these filmi touches and a tendency to go over the top, Mehreen Jabbar’s directorial hand is very much in control. .[37] In an issue of Dawn April 6, 2015, Sadaf Siddiqui stated that "Mera Naam Yousuf Hai is a One sided Love story so far" she comments not the plot statingWhat does one do when one’s own parents are engaged in a game of one-upmanship, placing one’s freedom and right to choose in jeopardy?.[38] For the current episode arc Sadaf once again praised Qamar's classic storyline stating Khalilur Rehman Qamar’s writing sparkles with wit and clearly unke kamaan pe bahut se teer hai. The way the story and each of the characters is revealed adds something new to the plot progression and builds on each characters back stories.[38]

On July 29, 2015, Sadaf Siddui's praised the show's screenplay and storyline commenting Do class concerns trump love? Mera Naam Yousuf Hai asks big questions . In her article she said that Writer creates chemistry and romantic tension between the leads despite them not sharing much screen time. It is sheer mastery that makes allowance for conservatism and added that he carefully tends to family relationships and friendships.
