Matthew Spencer (born March 24, 1997) is a Canadian ice hockey defenceman. He is currently playing with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Spencer was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second round (44th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Amateur career

Spencer was the captain of the Oakville Rangers Minor Midget AAA team which won the 2012–13 OHL Cup.[1] The following year he was named the 2013–14 Ontario Minor Hockey Association Player of the Year,[2] and was selected 3rd overall by the Peterborough Petes in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection draft.[3] His outstanding play with the Petes was recognized when he was chosen to skate as a member of Canada Ontario at the 2014 World U-17 Hockey Challenge.[4] He was also invited to compete with the Canada men's national under-18 ice hockey team at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament where he help Team Canada win gold.[5] During the 2014–15 season, Spencer was included as a Member of the OHL All-Stars for the 2014 Subway Super Series,[6] and chosen to skate at the 2015 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.[7] In April 2015, he won a bronze medal as a member of Team Canada at the 2015 IIHF World U18 Championships.[8]

Spencer is rated as a top prospect who was projected as a possible first round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.[9]
