Kapasiwin is a summer village in Alberta, Canada. It is located in the eastern shore of Wabamun Lake, south of Wabamun Lake Provincial Park and the Yellowhead Highway. The name derives from kapesiwin (ᑲᐯᓯᐃᐧᐣ), the Cree word for "campground".[3] It was known as the Village of Wabamun Beach from 1913 to 1918.

History

Kapasiwin was originally incorporated on October 25, 1913 as the Village of Wabamun Beach.[4] It was renamed to the Village Municipality of Kepasiwin on August 28, 1918.[5] Recognizing that the village acted like a summer village, the Province of Alberta officially incorporated it as the Summer Village of Kapasiwin on September 1, 1993.[6]

Demographics

In the 2011 Census, the Summer Village of Kapasiwin had a population of 10 living in 7 of its 45 total dwellings, a -74.4% change from its 2006 population of 39. With a land area of 0.31 km2 (0.12 sq mi), it had a population density of 32.3/km2 (83.5/sq mi) in 2011.[2]

The population of the Summer Village of Kapasiwin according to its 2011 municipal census is 14,[7] a 6.7% decrease from its 2009 municipal census population of 15.[8]

In 2006, Kapasiwin had a population of 39 living in 28 dwellings, a 160.0% increase from 2001.[9] However, this population has since been revised by Statistics Canada to 15.[10] The summer village had a land area of 0.31 km2 (0.12 sq mi) and a population density of 48.4/km2 (125/sq mi) using the revised 2006 population count.[9][10]
