Attention: A Tribute to Jermaine Stewart is a posthumously released album of songs from American R&B singer Jermaine Stewart. The compilation release features various material previously unreleased and never heard before.[1]
Background
Shortly before his death, Stewart had returned to the studio to record a new album titled Believe In Me. Although the album was not completed, some of the finished tracks were released on Attention: A Tribute to Jermaine Stewart, along with various other older tracks. The album was released by BFG Records, which was owned by Stewart's brother Gene Stewart. It was released to as a special tribute album dedicated in the remembrance of the late Jermaine Stewart.[2] The project was supervised by Gene, and proceeds from the album were supposed to go towards a headstone with a photograph where Jermaine rests (however, it is alleged that a headstone was finally purchased by a fan of Jermaine's in 2014), as well as scholarships helping those in need.[3]
Gene Stewart had stated "It's my pleasure to present, my tribute to my beloved brother, "Jermaine Stewart" who past away March 17, 1997. I had to undergo a very difficult visit to Los Angeles, California to move my brothers belongings to Chicago. After finally getting all of his personal property settled here in Chicago, I manage to get the time to look through some of his items and came across some music tracks that never made the hit charts or just never been heard before. 12 songs became my favorites, and I felted like I must share these tunes with his fans as a special tribute in memories of him. He loved his fans, and I knew his fans loved him. I personally felted that, Jermaine was never really appreciated for his talents and the many people he's helped. For the short period of time, he's touched the hearts of so many. Out of all of his accomplishments, Jermaine Stewart, never received a grammy, and who can forget all those hit tunes. So many to mention and still are played and heard today. Here are some tracks that were not included such as, "Attention" which is the title song on the CD, and its strong message speaks for itself. Also another track titled, "Gone Are Those Days", which brings back memories of yester years of all of our lives in those hey days of the 70's and 80's. And as part of this tribute to him, I wish to have a Tombstone made with his photo image, and Scholarships in the name of "Jermaine Stewart", in the hope of giving grants to aid students in need."[3]
This album features 12 in total tracks and 9 of these tracks had never been heard or released before. "Imagine We're in Love" was originally the b-side to the 1988 single "Get Lucky", "Places" was the b-side of the 1988 single "Don't Talk Dirty to Me" and "Search" was the b-side to the 1989 single "Is It Really Love?". All of these singles were from the 1987 album Say It Again.[4][5][6] The song "Lifestyle" is an alternate version of the song originally recorded during the sessions of making the 1992 unreleased album Set Me Free.
The album was issued on CD, originally via mail order, and was later made available on Amazon as a download and on CD.[7][2][8]
Following the album's release, BFG Records would also release In Loving Memories of Jermaine Stewart: His Greatest Hits in 2011.[9]
