Amguri (IPA: æmˈgʊərɪ) is a town and municipal area committee in the Sivasagar district in the state of Assam, India.

Geography

Amguri is located in the state of Assam, near the border of Nagaland, in north-east India. It has an average elevation of 74 metres (242 feet). It is situated on the bank of the river Jhanji and famous for its tea gardens and oil fields.

Demographics

At the 2001 census,[1] Amguri had a population of 6944. Males constitute 56% of the population and females 44%, and 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Amguri has an literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national literacy average of 59.5%. In Amguri, 55% of the male and 45% of the female population are literate.

Education

The famous educational institutes in Amguri are Auniati Hemchandradev Higher Secondary School (Science and Commerce stream only at 10+2 level), distinguished international scientist Dr. Khirud Gogoi is an alumnus of this school; Amguri Girls High School, and Amguri College. Amguri has several private as well as government schools, those are Don Bosco High School, Jnan Bikash VidyaPith, Rameshwar Dutta High School, Pengera Girls High School, Janata High School, the Arunodoi Academy and Lachit M.E.school, one of the upper primary school located in Halowa gaon . There is a junior college (10+2) for arts and science stream. Rameswar Dutta High School is the pioneer English medium school in Amguri established in 1981. Late Nobin Chandra Dutta initiated the institution in the memory of his father Lt Rameswar Dutta. Dr. Bindu Pritam Dutta is the current Principal i/c of the institute. The School is situated in the midst of naturally beautiful environment at ward no.7, Amguri Town with a digitally enriched campus.

Culture

There are many clubs and organizations for co-curricular activities. Puberun is one of the social organization within Amguri. Another organization, Mahabahu, is sponsored by the Government of India's Sports and Youth Affairs. There is an Amguri Sports Association and a social organization called Maruwari Yuba Manch.

Politics

Amguri Town is part of the 103rd Amguri Legislative Assembly. Amguri is part of the Jorhat (Lok Sabha constituency).[2]

Health

Amguri town have one CHC in the mid of the town ship.Apart from that "Amguri Institute of Medical Speciality"shortly known as AIMS has set a trend in supplying health care services to the public with a vast facilities. It is the one and only multispeciality poly clinic in Amguri town which is set with an enriched digital technologies.
