The Young Scientists of Australia is a national non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of science in Australia to the 14- to 25-year-old demographic. The organization consists of chapters in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

The organisation is involved in organising various science shows, typically targeted at high school students. It also organises social events for its members, and is involved in various science promotion events such as National Science Week and the production of a radio show about science, airing on SYN Radio in Melbourne. YSA also staffs a large number of The Science Experience science schools in various universities around the country, whereby hundreds of YSA members volunteer weeks of their time to lead high school students around the universities.

Brisbane

YSA Brisbane is the founding chapter of YSA and in turn the oldest chapter in Australia.

YSA Sydney

The Sydney chapter has over 200 financial members and is managed by a committee of twelve members of which four are the executive committee members of the chapter. YSA Sydney participates in a range of events throughout the year ranging from running its very own presentation and science show training camps (PaSST) as well as coordinating various events for our partner organisations. We have connections with organisations such as The Science Schools Foundation, The University of New South Wales, The University of Sydney, Macquarie University and The University of Wollongong.

Melbourne

The Melbourne Chapter runs monthly socials, produces weekly science podcasts on soundcloud called Lagrange Point and posts science content on our blog named Membrane. Our most recent endeavors have been to start Casual Cafe Science Talks (CCST) where people can discuss a science topic with a real life scientist in a casual setting, and Nebula, our newsletter for teachers and students to read about events coming up in science as well as upcoming events and recent publications by YSA Melbourne. We have connections with the Science School Foundation who run The ConocoPhillips Science Experience (TCSE), CSIRO and the Royal Society of Victoria amongst others. We are involved with running TCSE at Monash University (Clayton and Gippsland campuses), The University of Melbourne (Parkville and Dookie Campuses), Swinburne University. In the past we have also assisted at Penshurst TCSE. YSA Melbourne aims to accept all people into our community, many of our members share a love for science and science communication.

This chapter is the most recently founded, with the inaugural meeting occurring in December 2009.

Organisation Structure of YSA

Each of the chapters in YSA are separate legal entities and as such have no reliance on each other. However annually NatCamp and NatCon are held by one of each of the chapters in a round robin where members of all the chapters come together to interact.

NatCamp

Is the annual camp of YSA.

NatCon

NatCon is the national conference of YSA where members of committees come together and discuss a general direction for YSA as a body. The conference is held annually and runs for two to three days.

Past Chapters

A chapter of YSA Melbourne once existed in Perth. This chapter no longer exists.
