Xavier Institute of Management & Research (XIMR) is the management school of St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, founded by the Jesuits in 2006. The objective of XIMR is to provide a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of business management education and an appreciation of issues related to developing, nurturing, and projecting competitive advantage globally. It has the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education.[1]
History
Xavier Institute Of Management was established in 1963 by Professor Pascoal Gisbert as St. Xavier’s Social Institute of Industry, when India was striving to achieve self-sufficiency. In 1971 the Institute's focus shifted to supervisory and managerial skills and its name was changed to Xavier Institute of Management (XIM), until 2006 when it became Xavier Institute of Management and Research (XIMR). XIMR trains managers with skills in doing business internationally and globally[2] and facilitates entry into African markets.[3]
Academics
The program lasts two years (four semesters). Most courses are internally assessed with equal weight given to classroom assessment and written examination. University papers are weighted 40% internally and 60% through University examination.[4] Nine resident faculty collaborate with about 66 visiting faculty drawn from industry and academia.[5]
The Institute provides elective courses such as International Relations, Comparative Philosophy, Comparative Religion, and Cross-cultrural Management.[6] In January 2011 the Centre for Africa Studies was launched in association with Makerere University Business School in Uganda, East Africa.[3][7] Summer placements with corporations are available,[8] with 59 corporations listed in the 2015-2017 brochure.[9] Firms that recruit XIMR students include Fortress Infrastructure Advisory Services, Crisil Limited, CMC Limited, HDFC Limited, ARMCO Chemical Process Systems, Axis Bank Limited, DraftfCB Ulka Group India.[10] The Institute has maintained a 100% placement rate for graduates.[11] "Fast tract batch" is a program which identifies the top students for special attention, including sending 10 each summer to Africa for their placement.[12]
XIMR is ranked 74th among the top 200 business schools in India.[13]
