William P. Bradley

Willam P. Bradley (born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania in 1870 - June 1938) was a lawyer, who also served in the United States Navy. He served on the City Council of Detroit, Michigan from 1919 to 1938.

Career

He attended the local catholic parish schools and then attended Niagara College in Niagara, New York. Upon graduation from Niagara College, Bradley stayed on at Niagara College and studied for his New York Bar Exams. He became an Attorney. He then traveled to Ireland to visit some of his relatives and wrote article for the local Williamsport Newspaper.

Upon returning to Williamsport, Bradley decided to travel to Kansas City. In Kansas City, he enlisted in the Navy and was sent down the Missisippii River to New Orleans where he boarded a Naval Ship that took him through the Panama Canal and to the Pacific Fleet.

Bradley served in the Navy for 20 years and then moved to Detroit, Michigan. It was in Detroit where he met his wife Fidelis Fox from Pittsford, VT. They had three sons.

Bradley was the Chairman of the Great Lakes Tide Water Commission.^[1]

He practiced law in Detroit, and also was part owner of a Brewery. He was owner of the Bradley Moving and Storage Company, which later was run by his oldest son William P. Bradley, Jr. This firm became part of United Van Lines and was merged with the Fernstrom Moving Company in Chicago.

Bradley was elected to at large as a Non-Partisan Candidate to the Detroit City Council and served from 1919 until he died in June 1938. On several occasions, he was Chairman of the City Council and would fill in for the Mayor when he was out of town, or when the mayor died in office or left to serve in another government roll. He was on the City Council during the Great Detroit City Bank crisis.
