Waleed Iqbal is a Pakistani politician, lawyer and law professor. He is the grandson of poet and politician Muhammad Iqbal,[1][2] and the son of philosopher and former judge Justice Javed Iqbal and Justice Nasira Iqbal. Waleed started his political career in 2011 when he joined the political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf[3] and ran as the party's candidate for National Assembly from NA-124 (Lahore-VII) in the 2013 election.[4][5][6] He was defeated in the election by Sheikh Rohail Asghar of PMLN.[7]
Education
After completing high school at Aitchison College in Lahore, Waleed went to the United States for higher education and received a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1988. He received a Bachelor of Laws degree from University of Punjab in 1994 and a Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School in 1997. Waleed also has a Master of Philosophy degree from University of Cambridge.[5][8]
Experience
Waleed specialises in cross-border and local mergers and acquisitions, privatisations, corporate and project finance (particularly in the power sector), financial institutions, investment management, joint ventures, energy and petroleum (both upstream and downstream business), asset finance, IT, telecommunications and software development, and corporate restructurings. Between 1997 and 2004, he worked for two leading international law firms, Sullivan & Cromwell and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Waleed returned to Pakistan and restarted his law practice in January 2005. Waleed currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of Business Law at the Suleman Dawood School of Business of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). He is a nominee of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, is on the board of directors of the Lahore Stock Exchange, and is a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN).[5][9]
