Veltech Dr. RR & Dr. SR University (Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr.Sagunthala R&D Institute of Science and Technology, commonly referred to as Vel Tech University), is an Indian institute of higher education located in Avadi , Chennai. It was founded in 1997 by Dr. R. Rangarajan and Dr. Sagunthala Rangarajan. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in engineering and technology in addition to a Master of Business Administration.

History

Vel Tech was initially constituted in 1997 as an engineering college affiliated to the University of Madras, with courses in computer science & engineering, electronics & communication engineering and electrical & electronics engineering. From 2001 the college was affiliated to Anna University. Most of its programmes were accredited by National Board of Accreditation. The college was recognised as a deemed university in 2008.[[:Category:|]]

Accreditation

In November 2014 the university received Tier I accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation for its aeronautical and mechanical engineering undergraduate programs.[1] In December 2015 the university was accredited with an "A" grade (the highest grade) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.[2]

Admissions

Admission is based on the "Vel Tech University Engineering Entrance Examination" conducted by the university at more than 50 centres across the country. Admissions to postgraduate courses are done through separate exam held in the first week of June every year.

Scholarships

The university offers a "Mahatma Gandhi National Merit Scholarship" for meritorious and deserving students. Under the scholarship scheme, the top ranking candidate admitted to the university from each state and union territory receives their entire tuition waived, whilst other high-scoring students have half of their tuition waived. In 2015, a total of 314 students received either a full or half-scholarship, worth more than 10 million rupees.[3]

Location

VEL Tech University has a campus of about 53 acres. The Campus is located on the Outer Ring Road in west Chennai, Avadi. The nearest airport is Chennai and the nearest railway station is Chennai Central. All suburban trains stops at Avadi junction which is about 10 minutes drive away from the campus. The campus is accessible by road from Chennai, Bengaluru and Andhra Pradesh.

Academics

The University offers academic programs in Engineering and technology, Science and Management Studies. This university offers 10 Undergraduate, 4 Postgraduate (in Academic Stream) and 8 Postgraduate (in Industry Stream) Programmes in Engineering and Technology in addition to the Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Academic and Industry Streams with various specialisations. The University also offers Doctorate programmes under all the departments. All programme follow Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with 6 degree choices. Course Choice within the programme, Semester choice, faculty choice, inter programme/department / school level course choice, inter-institute level course choice and MOOC course choice. All the programme follow Outcome-based education (OBE) for the graduates as envisaged by Washington Accord.
