The first USS Murray (SP-1438) was a motorboat that served as a United States Navy patrol boat from 1917 to 1918.
Murray was built as a civilian motorboat in 1915 by Chance Marine Construction Company at Annapolis, Maryland, for the Conservation Commission of Maryland. She was loaned to the U.S. Navy for World War I service and was ordered delivered to the Navy on 17 August 1917.
Commissioned as USS Murray (SP-1438), she served on patrol in the 5th Naval District for the rest of the war. She was returned to the Conservation Commission on 26 November 1918.
Notes
- ↑ Both the Dictionary of Naval Fighting Ships (at http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/s21/swan-i.htm) and NavSource Online (at http://www.navsource.org/archives/12/171437.htm) describe her speed as "10 mph", implying statute miles per hour as used for ground vehicles, but presumably her speed in nautical miles per hour (knots) was intended. If the speed really is being provided in statute miles per hour, the speed in knots would be about 8.7.
