Tuscalee

Tuscalee was a steeplechaser horse who was inducted into the Maryland Thoroughbred Hall of Fame, and the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Background

Tuscalee was a bay gelding born in 1960. He stood 15.3 hands (63 inches, 160 cm) in height, and his body was able to last the test of time, running for 9 years in total.

Flat career

Starting his career he was a flat racing horse, but only won once in 8 flat races as a 3 year old. He stayed to flat racing for a short time during his 4 year old year. He was able to muster a 2nd victory but he stopped and switched to steeplechasing.

Steeplechase career

Despite having a total of 7 steeplechase victories in his 4-year-old-season this was not the best of Tuscalee. After a modest 2 wins as a 5-year-old. But his true lights shined as a 6 year old. Running 13 times he won a record 10 wins. To this day it is still a record for the most wins in a season for a steeplechaser. The rest of his career he lost a couple but gradually stacking up victories. His career ended at the age of 12 when he won his 4th and final National Hunt Cup, giving him his 37th steeplechase victory while it was his 39th overall.
