Tri City Mall

Tri-City Mall was a mall located in Mesa, Arizona, at the northeast corner of Main Street and Dobson Road. It was opened in 1968 and was the first enclosed shopping center in the East Valley region of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It was named Tri-City because it was intended to draw shoppers from three East Valley cities: Mesa, Tempe and Chandler.

The mall contained 55 stores and was anchored by a Bashas' supermarket, Diamond's department store (later Winston's, then ZCMI), and JCPenney. The mall first encountered problems when the large Metrocenter mall opened in north central Phoenix in 1973. Despite this, Tri City Mall continued to prosper until several additional malls (among them Fiesta Mall and Paradise Valley Mall) were constructed in the 1970s and 1980s. The mall closed in 1998 and was demolished to make way for a new strip mall shopping center, Tri-City Pavilions, which is anchored by a Safeway supermarket. The last standing Tri-City Mall store (the gutted remains of JCPenney) was demolished in April 2006 to make way for the Sycamore/Main Street Valley Metro Rail transit station.^[1]There is a Park and ride Parking lot north of Main Street east of the new mall for users (commuters) of the transit station to park their cars.
