The Story Begins is the debut extended play by South Korean girl group Twice. The album was released digitally and physically on October 20, 2015[1] by JYP Entertainment and distributed by KT Music. The album contains six tracks including the lead single, "Like Ooh Ahh", which was composed by Black Eyed Pilseung and is a blend of several different genres.

Background and release

On October 7, 2015, JYP Entertainment launched the band's official website and announced via SNS that the group would debut with the mini-album The Story Begins and title-track "Like OOH-AHH". The track is described as a 'color pop' dance track with elements of hip-hop, rock, and R&B.[2] The composition team included Black Eyed Pilseung, known for composing successful releases such as Miss A's "Only You."[3][4][5][6][7]

Teasers featuring each of the members for their music video were released from October 12 to 14, 2015.[8] On October 20, the song's music video were released online and through the Naver V App.[9]

Within five months after its release, the music video for "Like OOH-AHH" hit 50 million views and replaced 2NE1's "Fire" as the most-viewed debut music video for any K-pop group.[10][11] It went on to hit 100 million views on November 11, 2016, making Twice the fourth K-pop girl group to reach this milestone, as well as the first debut music video to do so.[12]

Promotion

Twice held a live showcase on October 20, where they performed "Like OOH-AHH" along with dance tracks "Must Be Crazy" and "Do It Again."[13][14]

The group started promoting their title track "Like Ooh Ahh" with the b-side "Do It Again" on music shows on October 22. They first performed the songs on Mnet's M! Countdown,[15] followed by performances on KBS' Music Bank, MBC's Show! Music Core and SBS's Inkigayo.

Commercial performance

The Story Begins debuted at number four on the Gaon Album Chart for the week ending October 24, 2015 and peaked at number three two weeks later.[16][17] As of April 2016, the album had sold 70,647 copies in South Korea[18] and 12,141+ copies in Japan.[19]

Future Impacts and Effects

On September 23, 2016, Twice released their two official colours, namely Apricot (Pantone 712 C) and Neon Magenta (Pantone 812 C), which signify the group and their fan club called "Once", which was also based on the costumes used on Like Ooh Ahh MV.[20][21] On October 19, Twice revealed their official light stick adorned with their official colours dubbed "Candy Bong", with bong meaning stick in Korean, which is inspired by the song "Candy Boy" from their first mini album.[22]
