Production
On May 9, 2015, it was announced that Focus Features had bought the American rights to the Antony Johnston's spy thriller graphic novel The Coldest City, with Charlize Theron set to play the lead role of a female spy.[2] David Leitch and Chad Stahelski were attached to direct the film based on the script by Kurt Johnstad, with the production start in October in Germany.[2] Sierra/Affinity's Nick Meyer would be fully financing the film with a budget of around $30 million. Theron would produce the film along with Beth Kono & A.J. Dix through her Denver and Delilah Productions, Eric Gitter & Peter Schwerin through Closed on Mondays Entertainment, Kelly McCormick through Sierra/Affinity, with 87Eleven.[2] On October 2, 2015, Leitch exited his partner Stahelski's John Wick 2 to direct The Coldest City alone, which would start shooting in November in Hungary and Germany.[3] On October 16, 2015, James McAvoy joined the cast of the film.[4] November 2, 2015, John Goodman signed on to play the role of an American agent.[5] On October 26, 2015, TheWrap reported that Sofia Boutella had joined the film for an unspecified role.[6]
Principal photography on the film began on November 22, 2015 in Budapest,[7] and it would later move to Berlin.[3]
Release
In May 2015, Focus Features acquired distribution rights to the film.[8] The film is scheduled to be released on August 11, 2017.[9][10] It was later pushed up to July 28, 2017.[11]
