The Surtees TS19 was a Formula One car used by Surtees during the 1976, 1977 and 1978 seasons. It was designed by John Surtees and Ken Sears.[1][2]
Racing history
Team Surtees
1976
For 1976 Surtees choose a controversial sponsorship deal with Durex condoms for Australian Alan Jones to drive. The second car was driven by Brett Lunger but with sponsorship from Campari. The team skipped the 1976 Brazilian Grand Prix because the TS19 was not ready. The TS19 was used at South Africa but only one was available for Lunger and finished 11th.[3] A second TS19 was ready for Jones for the United States Grand Prix West and the Australian was ten laps down and not classified and the American failed to qualify for his home race.[4] At Spain Jones finished ninth and Lunger failed to qualify.[5] The Belgian Grand Prix saw the Australian fifth and the American retire with an electrical problem.[6] Before Monaco, Lunger's TS19 had been sold to Henri Pescarolo's Team Norev and the American was waiting for the team to finish a new TS19 for him. Jones retired because he and Carlos Reutemann's Brabham crashed at Sainte-Dévote corner.[7] The Swedish Grand Prix saw the Australian 13th and the American returned with a new TS19 and finished 15th.[8] At France, Jones retired with suspension failure and Lunger finished 16th.[9] The British Grand Prix saw the Australian fifth and the American retired with a broken gearbox.[10] At Germany Jones finished tenth and Lunger retired because he and Harald Ertl's Hesketh both hit Niki Lauda's Ferrari. Guy Edwards's Hesketh managed to avoid the Ferrari. All three drivers stopped and tried to get Lauda out of the flames and they were joined by Arturo Merzario, who stopped his Wolf-Williams after seeing the wreck.[11] The Austrian Grand Prix saw both drivers have accidents, The Australian retired on lap thirty and the American had his accident with three laps to go but finished tenth.[12] Before Holland, Lunger had stepped down from Surtees and Sweden's Conny Andersson had been drafted in but retired with engine failure and Jones finished eighth,[13] Lunger returned for the Italian Grand Prix and the American finished 14th and the Australian finished 12th.[14] At Canada, Lunger finished 15th and Jones finished 16th.[15] The United States Grand Prix East and the Australian finished eighth and the American finished 11th.[16] Noritake Takahara rented a TS19 and he replaced Lunger Before Japan and finished ninth and Jones finished fourth.[17]
The Surtees team finished tenth in the Constructors' Championship standings with seven points.
1977
For 1977, Surtees had a new driver line-up. Austrian Hans Binder drove the Durex sponsored car and Italian Vittorio Brambilla drove with sponsorship from Beta. The first race of 1977 year was the 1977 Argentine Grand Prix and it saw Binder retire with an accident and Brambilla run out of fuel five laps from the finish resulting in a seventh-place finish.[18] Both cars retired at Brazil. The Italian with an accident and the Austrian with broken suspension.[19] The South African Grand Prix saw Brambilla seventh and Binder 11th,[20] At the United States West, the Austrian finished 11th and the Italian retired with an accident.[21] The Spanish Grand Prix saw Brambilla retire after a collision with Clay Regazzoni (Ensign) and Binder ninth.[22] At Monaco, the Italian finished eighth and the Austrian retired with fuel system failure.[23] Before the Belgian Grand Prix, Binder was dropped and the team hired Australian Larry Perkins who finished 12th with Brambilla 4th.[24] The Australian failed to qualify for Sweden and the Italian retired with fuel pressure failure.[25] The French Grand Prix saw Brambilla 13th but Perkins was replaced halfway through practice by Frenchman Patrick Tambay. Both Perkins and Tambay failed to qualify.[26] For Britain, Brambilla finished eighth with new teammate, Australian Vern Schuppan, 12th.[27] The German Grand Prix saw the Italian finish fifth and the Australian seventh.[28] The Austria saw Brambilla finish 15th and Schuppan 16th.[29] The Australian failed to qualify for the Dutch Grand Prix and the Italian finished 12th.[30] The Italians were disappointed at Italy. Lamberto Leoni replaced Schuppan but failed to qualify and Brambilla retired with an accident.[31] Before the United States Grand Prix East Leoni was replaced by Binder and the Austrian finished 11th and the Italian finished 19th,[32] At Canada Brambilla finish sixth and Binder retired with an Accident.[33] The Japanese Grand Prix saw the Italian eighth and the Austrian retired after Mario Andretti wheel came off the Lotus caused both Binder and Noritake Takahara (Kojima) to spin off.[34]
The Surtees team finished eleventh in the Constructors' Championship standings with six points.
1978
Surtees retained Brambilla for 1978, but Binder was replaced by Englishman Rupert Keegan. The first race of 1978 was the 1978 Argentine Grand Prix, Brambilla finished 18th and Keegan retired with overheating.[35] At Brazil, the Italian failed to qualify and the Englishman retired with an accident.[36] The South African Grand Prix saw Brambilla 12th and Keegan retired when his engine failed,[37] The Italian retired with transmission failure at the United States West bot the Englishman set the 22nd fastest qualifying times but couldn't take the grid due to a practice accident.[38] For the Monaco Grand Prix Brambilla drove the new Surtees TS20 but Keegan was still using the TS19 as there was only one TS20 available, Keegan retired with transmission failure.[39] At Belgium but the Englishman failed to qualify and that was the last race of the TS19 as there were two TS20's available for the rest of the year.[40] The team had no Constructors points or driver points from the TS19 and the TS20. Unable to get sufficient money, the team left F1 after the 1978 season, despite having a car built for 1979. After racing the car in the British Aurora series (formerly F5000) briefly that year, Surtees Racing Organization was closed for good.
Team Norev Racing
In 1976 Team Norev Racing bought a TS19 from Surtees and hired Frenchman Henri Pescarolo. The team entered the 1976 Monaco Grand Prix but Pescarolo failed to qualify. The team skipped Sweden but entered the French Grand Prix and the Frenchman retired at his home race due to suspension failure. Pescarolo retired from Britain because his fuel system failed. The Frenchman failed to qualify for the German Grand Prix. Pescarolo finished ninth at Austria. The Frenchman finished 11th at the Dutch Grand Prix. Pescarolo finished 17th at Italy. The Frenchman finished 19th at the Canadian Grand Prix. At the United States East Pescarolo was eleven laps down and not classified. Team Norev Racing choose not to race the Japanese Grand Prix to concentrate on the McLaren effort in 1977
Melchester Racing
In 1977 Melchester Racing bought a TS19 from Surtees and hired Englishman Tony Trimmer to drive at his home race, The 1977 British Grand Prix but he failed to pre-qualify. Melchester Racing chose not to enter the rest of 1977, they entered McLaren's instead for 1978.
