Sugam Pokharel (Nepali: सुगम पाेखरेल) is a Nepalese pop singer, music composer, songwriter and radio jockey.[1] Born and raised in Morang, he was unknowingly influenced by the songs of Sanjay Shrestha, Deep Shrestha and Harish Mathema for his singing career as pop singer.
His successfully acclaimed first solo recording, Mero Sansaar (2001), characterized by its wide range of pop music influences, official debuted a top the Nepalese pop music industry. He is considered as the one of the most popular voices for pop as well as melodious songs and is one of the most famous singers of Nepal.
Early life career
Sugam was born in Mangalbare, Morang on 20 September 1979 . His father was government scribe in Department of Land Reform Management by profession but also knows as advocate in locality, and his elder brother Sunil Pokharel is veteran theater artist.[2] Sugam was shy and mediocre student, regardless, used to sing in school functions and gathering, and people used to praise his melodious voice and singing skill.
After completion of School Leaving Certificate (Nepal) from Biratnagar, Sugam moved to Kathmandu for his high school education. Initially having no desire to record music as a professional singer or pursue career as pop singer, be that as it may, he decided record a song when he met Sudin Pokharel in Kathmandu, who was also willing to record the song. They both recorded their first song Ma Maya Garchu at NAAD Studio, Anamnagar in 1995, which was super flop. After their unsuccessful debut, they again gathered courage to record another song after 4 months of their first release, titled as Payera Timilai Yesto Khusi Chhu, which was another another greatest flop. Although, facing with two biggest flop in their debut career, their paramount desire of recording hit song didn't halt them to recorded their third song Panchi. Third song also didn't do well in the market and the collaboration between Sugam and Sudin ended.
Radio Career
In 1997, Sugam started working as a librarian in Radio Sagarmatha, Nepal's first community radio in the aftermath of three biggest flop in his early singing career with Sudin Pokharel. Later on he started hosting a musical program.
Musical Career
He began his career with Solo Song "Mero Sansaar"(2001). His initial songs like Feri Tyo Din, Kati Din Bitey, Maya Ko Baato, Samhalinchha Kaile Mann, Timi Ma Bhanda, etc established himself as Pop Star. His albums are Highway, Sutra, Yatra, School Pathshala, Sugam Song Geet. Blessed with Great Voice, Sugam remained a Pop Superstar, Rock Icon and Style Icon. During 2000s, he always remained as Pop King and his hits never fluctuated.
He often worked with Sudin Pokhrel(a.k.a.Rapper DA69) who also comes from his hometown Biratnagar. "The Unity" band (Rapper DA69, VJAsif Shah, Aidray) were mostly associated with him in tge songs like Aaja Feri Din Bityo, etc. Girish Khatiwada (NepHop) (the First Rapper of Nepal) who hails from his hometown Biratnagar also was associated with him.
