Stocking Abbey

Stocking Abbey was an abbey in the village of Oldstead, North Yorkshire, England.[1]

The abbey at Stocking was built in 1147 for what was Savigniac (but soon became Cistercian) monks. The abbey was only meant to be temporary as they had yet to find a suitable site[2] and the monks that worshipped there moved to Byland Abbey 30 years later in 1177.[3]

Excavations and archaeological investigations have offered evidence that the cloister and small stone church may have existed on the site of Oldstead Hall, though the proof is not conclusive.[4]
