The Screen Award for Best Actress is one of the Screen Awards of merit presented annually by a distinguished panel of judges from the Indian "Bollywood" film industry, to recognise an actress who has delivered an outstanding performance in a leading role.

Vidya Balan, with four consecutive wins, has more Best Actress wins than any other actress. Followed by Madhuri Dixit with three wins. Six actresses have won the award twice; in chronological order, they are Kajol, Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukerji, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone.

Four actresses have won the award in consecutive years; in chronological order, they are Madhuri Dixit (1995–96), Rani Mukerji (2005–06), Kareena Kapoor (2007–08), and Vidya Balan (2010–13).

Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukerji, Tabu and Priyanka Chopra are the only four actresses who have won both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards. Rani Mukerjee is also the first and only actress to win both these awards in the same year.

Kajol, holds the record for most nominations in the Best Actress category, with 9, followed by Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukerji and Priyanka Chopra (7).

Only once have two actresses been nominated for the same film: Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan for No One Killed Jessica (2011).

Kangana Ranaut is the only actress to be nominated twice for the same role; she was nominated for her role as Tanuja "Tanu" Trivedi in 2012 and 2016.

Thrice have cousins been nominated for the Best Actress Award during the same year: Kajol and Rani Mukerji in 1999, Parineeti Chopra and Priyanka Chopra in 2013 and 2015.
