Srokowo [srɔˈkɔvɔ] (1945-50: Dryfort), (German: Drengfurt) is a village in Kętrzyn County, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in northern Poland, close to the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia. It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Srokowo.[1] It lies approximately 17 kilometres (11 mi) north-east of Kętrzyn and 83 km (52 mi) north-east of the regional capital Olsztyn.
Before 1945 the area was part of the German province of East Prussia. It was renamed Dryfort in 1945, and Srokowo in 1950 after Stanisław Srokowski, the head of the Polish Committee for Settling of Place Names.[2] After World War II the region was placed under Polish administration and ethnically cleansed according to the post-war Potsdam Agreement. The native German populace was expelled and replaced with Poles.
The village has a population of 1,400.
