The South Division One is a league for shinty teams. It is in the third tier of the Shinty league system. The winners of the league play off with the winners of North Division One for promotion to the National Division One. The trophy awarded to the winners is the Dunn Cup.

As of 2009, the league is known for sponsorship reasons as the Marine Harvest South Division One.[1]

History

At various times in its history the South Division One has varied in regards to its status.

The South Division One became the Top Tier of shinty in the South of Scotland upon the amalgamation of the Dunn League and the Southern League in 1974. The Dunn Cup was awarded then to the winners of the new Division. In 1974-75, the league title was shared between Kyles Athletic and Oban Camanachd.

From the early 1980s, there was a national league final with the winners of the North Division One, which could be considered a possible higher tier. However the advent of the Premier Division in 1996, saw the South Division One become the undoubted second tier.

Between 1996 and 1999, the winners of North Division One and South Division One would play off to gain promotion to the top tier.

Between 1999 and 2006, the South Division One became the third tier of the league system and with the advent of the National Division One the winners of North Division One and South Division One would play off to gain promotion to National Division One.

In 2005, South Division One was also the bottom tier in the South as the withdrawal of the Universities on the advent of summer shinty and Oban Celtic and Ballachulish second teams folding saw the South Division Two go into abeyance for a year.

In 2007, the National Division One was removed, and the Division once again was the second tier of league shinty. The winners of the South Division One were guaranteed promotion to the Premier Division.

Whilst in the North, there are issues regarding promotion and relegation of Reserve teams, since 2006, second teams have been allowed entry to the second tier in the South. However, these teams cannot be promoted to the Top Tier even if they win the league has happened with Lochside Rovers in 2009. Glasgow Mid Argyll were given the promotion spot for finishing second.

Tayforth was relegated in 2009 and was replaced by Taynuilt. In 2010, Kyles Athletic were promoted along with Aberdour from South Division Two and both Glasgow Mid Argyll and Bute were relegated from the Premier Division. This swelled the numbers in the league to nine after several years of the league only numbering seven.

After several years of one team dominating and a small league,in 2012 South One was expected to be at its strongest for a long time, however, both Ballachulish and the reserve team of Kyles Athletic dramatically pulled out a month before the season, applying for demotion to South Division Two Relegation for Bute and Oban meant that the South Division One began to grow in strength, although teams from the South (apart from Inveraray and Kyles) struggled to compete with North clubs in the cups.

In 2013, the top three teams were eligible to promotion to the new National Division One, these were champions Glasgow Mid Argyll, Bute and Glenorchy. They will also be joined by Oban Camanachd in the season commencing 2014.
