Souljah (formerly Arigatoo) is an Indonesian reggae band formed in 1998, with first playing genre for ska. Name of group had derived from slang pronunciation of words Souldier.
Career
1998-2005: Career beginnings and Breaking the Roots
The band formed in April 1998 in Jakarta. Began from friends of the campus in University of Indonesia, Souljah had spare time between the turn of waiting period subjects since formed. In addition, Souljah had performed in festival and musical performances in Jakarta. After that, Offbeat Music Records had signed recording deal to Souljah and released debut studio album, entitled Breaking the Roots during passing of time and personnel changes. Its debut album had received positive response from music critics and public in Indonesia. However, all of its making the band reaching to successfully in music industry.
2007-2009: Bersamamu, Time For A Change and Mestakung
In 2007 after moving signed to Nagaswara, Souljah return to released second studio album Bersamamu and bought the band to new level in music. Souljah has penetrated to major cities in Java island through their two hits singles “Bersamamu” and “Ku Ingin Kau Mati”. Still same of year, Souljah was releasing their first English-language album, titled Time For A Change by their own record label Souljah. Following their third album, Souljah had releasing third studio album, titled Mestakung (stands for Semesta Mendukung) on 2009. Its album is an complementary trilogy album for “Merah Kuning Hijau” which embedded into three album released, such as Breaking the Roots in red, Bersamamu in yellow and Mestakung in green. Its trilogy album in color had deciphering of their career.
2014-present: This is Souljah
After five years of unreleased works, Souljah return to releasing fourth studio album This is Souljah which illustrated the band about matured in many ways and life as well as wisdom.[1][2] Its fourth album is an signified a new era and has making the band earning Best Jamaica award at the 2015 Hai Reader’s Poll Music Awards. In 2015, Souljah earning first award in major annual awards Anugerah Musik Indonesia for Best Reggae/Ska/Dub Steady Production Work.
