The Solomon Islands made their Paralympic Games début at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, United Kingdom, from August 29 to September 9, 2012.[1]
The Solomon Islands Paralympics Federation was recognised as a full member of the International Paralympic Committee in 2011, giving the country the right to send a delegation to the London Games. The Solomons initially hoped to send athletes to compete in track and field and powerlifting events. Among the country's hopefuls were Benjamin Vae in the shotput.[1] Ultimately, however, the country's delegation was composed of a single athlete: Hellen Saohaga, accompanied by her coach and two other officials.[2][3] She "was offered a wildcard entry to the London Games after contesting her first proper competition in Brisbane in March".[4] She was the country's flag-bearer during the Games' opening ceremony.[5] (Her name has also been reported as Hellen Tasaunga.[2])
Athletics
Hellen Saohaga, "who was born with seriously deformed legs",[4] competed in the women's shot put, F57 category (for wheelchair athletes).[6] She arrived in London without "her own seated throwing frame, thinking one would be provided by the local organisers". The Australian Paralympic Committee had one specifically made for her before her event.[4]
