Sofia Assefa (Amharic: ሶፍአ አሠፋ; born 14 November 1987 in Addis Ababa) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who specializes in the 3000 metres steeplechase.
Her personal best times are 9:09.84 minutes in the 3000 metres steeplechase, achieved in August 2012 at the Olympics in London, United Kingdom;,[1] where she won the silver medal, and 15:59.74 minutes in the 5000 metres, achieved in July 2007 in Liège.
In 2013, she won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Moscow; and in 2015 she won the gold medal at the African Games in Brazzaville. She finished thirteenth at the 2009 World Championships and fourth at the 2009 World Athletics Final. She also competed at the 2008 Olympic Games without reaching the final.
