Biography

Simon McDonald was born in 1869. He was raised on a farm, educated in the machinist trade, and was employed by daily newspapers in different parts of the United States in his early adult years. He served as the machinist in charge of the mechanical department at the Grand Forks Herald after coming to North Dakota in March 1914. He was elected as President of the North Dakota Federation of Labor in June 1915, and served in that position until June 1920. He was elected to the North Dakota Senate in 1932, and served there from 1933 to 1936. He was elected as a Railroad Commissioner in 1936, and his title changed to North Dakota Public Service Commissioner in 1940. He served until 1948 when, at age 79, he did not seek re-election. He died eight years later aged 86 in Bismarck.
