Sharanya Haridas

Sharanya Haridas (Born 2 November 1990) is an Indian poet and entrepreneur, best known as the Founder, C.E.O. and Editor-in-Chief of That's So Gloss, India’s first web magazine and online community exclusively for teenage girls and young women.[1][2]

Educational Background

Haridas attended the Choice School in Cochin[3] and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras where she majored in economics.[4] She was Editor of the Institute’s official campus news body- The Fifth Estate. Haridas has a Master's from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism where she was elected to the Society of Professional Journalists board.[5]

Professional Background

Writing

Haridas' debut collection of poems, The Tramp Speaks,[6] was published by D C Books Pvt Ltd in 2010 with a foreword by the critic K. Srilata. The Tramp Speaks Amazon The same year, she was a participating writer at the Hyderabad Literary Festival.[7] Her works frequently appear in online journals and papers in India.

That's So Gloss!

In 2011, Haridas started a media house Young Folks Media. That's So Gloss was launched over a year later, in June 2012.[8][9] The initial target market was teen girls as the print model for teen girl magazines in India had proved unsustainable. She was quoted as saying "I grew up in the 90s, reading my mother’s [Indian] women’s magazines and American teen girl e-zines – neither of which I could relate to. Almost 10 years hence, there is still no magazine in India catering exclusively to the Indian teen girl demographic." It was conceived as "a place for desi girls to hang out and share ideas on fun and serious issues" as well as a platform for PR and philanthropic ventures.[10]

Haridas was awarded the Ryerson Digital Media Zone International Fellowship.[11][12] In November 2012, she gave a TEDx talk at TEDxYouth Chennai titled "India's Generation in Transition".[13][14]
