Shane English School

Shane English School (シェーン英会話 shēn eikaiwa) is an English conversation school in Japan.[1] It was founded by Shane Lipscome[2] in Chiba Prefecture in 1977,[3] and was part of the Saxoncourt Group. It is now owned by the cram school operator Eikoh. As of November 2013, it has 182 branches located all over Japan.[4] As of November 2013 it has around 20,000 students. In addition to English, Shane also offers Chinese instruction.[5]

History

In 2001, after an education ministry panel recommended English education at elementary schools, Shane ran courses for Japanese elementary school teachers to prepare them for teaching English to their students.[6]

In 2010 Shane was purchased by the cram school operator Eikoh. At that time, Shane operated 199 schools in the Kantō region, of which 46 were franchised, with around 20,000 students. The four companies running Shaine were: Shane Corporation Japan Inc, Shane Corporation Kita Kanto Inc, Shane Corporation Higashi Kanto Inc. and Shane Corporation Minami Kanto Inc. Eikoh explained the purchase was due to Japanese elementary schools introducing English as a compulsory elementary school subject for fifth and sixth year students from 2011.[7]

Saxoncourt continues to recruit teachers for Shane, largely from the United Kingdom.[8]
