Sanjay Pinto

Sanjay Pinto is an Indian lawyer, columnist, author, public speaker, talk show host, former bureau chief and resident editor at NDTV 24x7 and executive editor at NDTV Hindu.

Early life

Pinto was born on 14 November, 1973, to a School Teacher Judy Pinto and Textile Marketing Executive Antony Vincent Pinto. He has an elder sister, Juliana, a lawyer. He went to school at the Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Egmore, Chennai, and graduated in 1991.

Education

Pinto studied history and politics at Loyola College, Chennai. He started and edited a magazine in college, the Loyola Herald. He also contributed to a column called Campus Beat in the Indian Express. In 1994, he received the "Most Outstanding Student of the year" award.[1]

He received a Bachelor of Law degree at Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai. While in college, he was offered a weekly column in the Indian Express to review programmes on television.

Television journalism

Pinto was hired as a correspondent for New Delhi Television in February, 1998. He covered a range of subjects, including elections, cricket tournaments, and natural disasters, and he also worked as an investigative journalist. He was known for his live reports and his anchoring of news bulletins, and election special shows. Pinto became the Bureau Chief of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry of NDTV 24x7 in 2006.

In 2010, he was appointed the Executive Editor of NDTV Hindu with a mandate to strengthen the news coverage. He also hosted the weekly debate show ‘Chennai Speaks Out’, various news based panel discussions, and talk shows with political leaders and bureaucratsPinto was conferred the Vocational Excellence Award for his contribution to the Indian Media by the Rotary Club of Madras North in 2012.[2][3]

Pinto left NDTV Hindu in 2012.

Radio talk shows

Pinto worked for All India Radio as a school and college student. In 2009, he approached the English-language radio station Chennai Live 104.8 FM with an idea for a debate show. He has conceptualised and anchored other shows including ‘Voice of Chennai',[4][5] ‘You’re Hired’, a career guidance show, and ‘Welcome Home’, a show on real estate and fine living.

Columns

Pinto has been writing a national fortnightly column on social media for The Hindu since 2012[6] and a column on political issues for Tehelka.[7]

Books

Pinto's book ‘Speakers Are Made Not Born’ was published by Covenant Media in 2013 and received positive reviews.[8][9][10][11]

Public speaking

Sanjay conducts the Landmark Debates every year.[12] It started as a series of debates involving public figures[13] but is now restricted to students.[14][15] He is a public speaker[16] at seminars, conferences, and panel discussions.[17] like the Battle of Ideas,[18] He regularly presides over Rotary Club events and Annual Day functions of educational institutions.

Legal practice

Pinto works as a lawyer in the Madras High Court, specialising in Media Law and also working with Constitutional, Criminal, Corporate and Consumer Law with a strong focus on Public Interest Litigation.

Personal life

Pinto is a Catholic. He is married to Vidya, a Tamil Brahmin. Vidya Pinto is a former television journalist and college lecturer, now a media and communications professional. They have two children.
