Central High School is a public, coeducational secondary school in San Angelo, Texas. It is part of the San Angelo Independent School District. The school serves grades 10-12, while a freshman campus serves grade 9. Its mascot is the Bobcat. The school serves much of San Angelo and the unincorporated community of Tankersley.[1]

Athletics

With a reported enrollment of 2,993[2] (which combines the freshman campus and high school enrollments), the Bobcats of San Angelo Central compete with some of Texas' largest high schools as a member of Conference 6A of the University Interscholastic League, the state's governing body for public-school competition.

Soccer

The Lady Cat soccer team, led by head coach Ben Henry, has made the playoffs four years running (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011), three times being knocked out in the bidistrict round (2009, 2010, 2011) and once in the area championship game (2008). The men's soccer team won the Regional Soccer Tournament and went on to the State Tournament in 2001. This is the first time Central has made it to the state tournament in the school's history. The lady Cat Soccer team made the playoffs each year from 2002-2005. The Lady Cat soccer team reached the round of sixteen in 2002. After a hard fought loss in overtime in Bedford, TX, several of the team members returned home with severe injuries. These included a broken hip, a broken foot, and a torn acl, all which directly came as a result from playing on a poorly maintained artificial turf field.

Gymnastics

The Lady Cats gymnastics team won back-to-back state championships four years. Members from both the women's and men's teams were selected for the Texas National Team, with the women (led by Central coach Tony Walker) winning the National Championship. The Bobcats have won the Texas State Championship in 1974, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1987, 2001, and 2015. The Lady Cats have won the Texas State Championship in 1989, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2014, and 2015[3]

Tennis

The Bobcats' tennis team finished the 2009 season ranked 15th by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association. And Mike and Travis were the greatest players to ever play for the team. [4]

Volleyball

The Lady Cats volleyball team finished its 2007 season ranked 22nd by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.[5] After 22 years of coaching, Central High School girls volleyball coach Connie Bozarth reached a milestone 500 wins on September 16, 2008.[6] Central's overall record is 32-10 (13-5 for 2008 season) and has been a regional qualifier for past three years.[7]

Cheerleading

The Central High School cheerleaders were crowned national champions at the 2008-2009, 2010, and 2011National Association of Cheerleaders Nationals competition. The cheerleaders are coached by Central High School math teacher, and former Bobcat gymnast, Matt Escue (teacher of the year).[8]

Baseball

The baseball program at Central has struggled as of recent years, but is expected to contend for district titles in upcoming years. Central has had numerous players drafted into the majors including, Trey Lunsford, Shea Morenz, Julio Guerrero, and Ramsey Koschak. Head coach is Patrick Penry.

Football

Central High School Bobcats football had its heyday from the 1940s through the 1970s under head coaches Jewell Wallace, Bob Harrell, Emory Bellard, Dan Lagrasta, and Smitty Hill, winning state championships in 1943 (open class) and 1966 (Conference 4A, the largest classification at the time).[9] Traditionally, Central competed with Odessa High, Odessa Permian, Midland High, Midland Lee, Abilene, and Abilene Cooper in UIL District 3-5A (District 3-4A until 1979), a grouping popularly known as the 'Little Southwest Conference' due to the extremely high standard of football exhibited by the district's schools. After the 1997 season, the Bobcats were moved away from the LSC into District 2-5A with teams from Lubbock and Amarillo.

Beginning with the 2008-2009 academic year, the Bobcats, along with five of its newer Panhandle rivals, will rejoin the four Odessa and Midland schools in an enlarged ten-team District 2-5A. Central's first season in the new district garnered them an 0-10 record for the season.[10] On January 20, 2009, SAISD formally approved Brent Davis, from Alice in South Texas, as the new head football coach. Davis' offensive and defensive coordinators from Alice are expected to be hired as Central assistant coaches.[11] Davis finished his first season with a 2-8 record, obtaining the two wins in the last two weeks of the season against Lubbock Coronado and Amarillo Tascosa. The two wins ended a 21-game losing streak that extended into the end of the 2007 season. The Bobcats, in 2010, reached the playoffs. They entered with a 4-6 record, winning their first game against El Paso Franklin before falling at home to Martin High School. In 2011, the Bobcats won their first undisputed district title for the first time since 1963. They finished the regular season with a record of 8-2.

Fine arts

Theatre

The Central High School theatre department is directed by Laura Smith. The department presents two mainstages a year and a presentation of their UIL Act Competition piece in the late spring.

The students involved in the department attend a yearly state thespian festival where the department had earned many honors such as "All-Star Troupe" and has had students compete at the international level in Monologues, Solo Musical, and even Theatrical Marketing.

The department is housed in the Sarah Bernhardt Theatre on the CHS campus.


Choir

The Central High School Choir Department received outstanding ratings at the UIL Choral Concert and Sight-reading Contest held on April 9, 2009 in Midland.

The Ladies' A Cappella (nonvarsity) and the Combined Men's Choir (varsity) each received superior ratings in concert and excellent ratings in Sight-reading competition. The Central Freshmen Concert Ladies, under the direction of Sunday Vaught, also received a superior rating in the concert competition. The CHS Varsity Women and the Varsity Mixed Choir each received the sweepstakes award, which included superior ratings in both concert and sight-reading competition. This is the highest award offered for performing the most advanced level of music and continues a winning tradition in the Central High School Choir Department.

For over twenty years, under the leadership of Director Les Cole, Central High Choirs have earned over 48 sweepstakes awards plus 13 superiors in either concert or sight-reading competition. Landon Gilmore is currently the Director of Choirs following Les Cole's retirement in 2011.

Orchestra

Central High School orchestra director David Phillips, director for 30 years, recently attained an accomplishment equaled by few in his career field. Under his direction, the Central High Varsity Orchestra received its 26th consecutive Sweepstakes award in UIL competition. The coveted Sweepstakes designation indicates the highest rating from judges in both concert performance and sight-reading.

Band

The Central High School Mighty Bobcat Band is under the direction of Head Band Director Joel Ashbrook, and assistants Mike Barry, Stephanie Dearborn, Robert Brewster, and Kristin Ellis. The band has a total of over 300 members. The band advanced to State competition in the 2014-2015 school year where it placed 37th. This marked the first time the band had advanced to such level in over 3 decades. The band is well known for its presence in the community, from football games to volunteer work. It is known that without them the football team and fans lower morale, thus in some instances losing the game. The 2015-2016 Marching Show consisted of "Bohemian Rhapsody: A Spectacular Tribute to Queen".

Clubs

Key Club

San Angelo Central's Key Club has been very successful over the years being ranked 6th of 307 clubs throughout Texas and Oklahoma in 2008 and 2009. Central's Key Club is located in Region 5, Division 12. Some of its sister clubs include Big Spring and Early.

Newspaper

Central High School's newspaper, The Campus Corral, won first place in the American Scholastic Press Association's 2008-2009 Newspaper Awards. Staff artist and news reporter Dana Choi received first place for her presidential election cartoon. They also won first place for the year of 2009-2010.

CHS Journalism teacher Joi Morgan (now retired) has been the faculty sponsor of Campus Corral. Her replacement teacher is yet to be named.

Speech and debate

Central Speech and Debate has taken multiple students to national competitions in Dallas, in 2006, Wichita, KS, in 2007, Las Vegas, NV, in 2008, Kansas City, MS, in 2010, Dallas in 2011, and Indianapolis in 2012. The team annually sends students to compete in both the UIL and TFA state tournaments. Notable students on the team in recent years include Nicole Brown and Brian Horton, who now compete nationally for Texas Tech University, Brian Ball, who won the 2007 UIL State Extemporaneous Speaking competition for 5A schools and now attends the University of Southern California,Cody Bean who will be attending the National Forensics League National tournament for the 4th time in 2013 and Zak Linzy who won the UIL State Poetry Interpretation competition for 5A schools in both 2011 and 2012. Linzy also placed 2nd at the National Forensics League National Tournament in 2011 and was crowned the poetry interpretation champion at the National Forensics League National Tournament in 2012.

CHS Speech and Debate Coach Julie Schniers has been the head of the team since the 2007-2008 school year, she is predicted to remain the head of the team for some time. Seth Rutledge joined the team to coach debate events in 2010. Seth Rutledge then left the team in 2012. Schniers remains the head coach, assisted by Tim Haynes.
