Sabaash Naidu (English: Bravo Naidu), titled Shabhash Kundu (English: Bravo Kundu) in Hindi, is an upcoming Indian trilingual spy comedy-adventure film written, co-produced and directed by Kamal Haasan. Starring Haasan in the lead, he will reprise the role of Balram Naidu (RAW Officer), a spin off of one of the characters which he played in Dasavathaaram (2008). The film also stars his daughter Shruti Haasan and Ramya Krishnan in major roles.[1][2][3]

Being shot in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi languages simultaneously, film's Principal photography commenced in June 2016 at Los Angeles, United States.[4] Music is composed by Ilaiyaraaja while Jaya Krishna Gummadi handles the cinematography.

The film was to be directed by T. K. Rajeev Kumar whose debut directorial was a Kamal Haasan starrer Chanakyan released in 1989,[5][6][7][8] but Kumar felt ill on the fourth day of the schedule and Haasan had to direct a song to avoid the delay,[9] and later officially took over as the director as Kumar was diagnosed with Lyme disease.[10][11]

The film is scheduled for a worldwide release in 2017.[12]

Development

Kamal Haasan decided to revive the popular character Balram Naidu, a RAW operative featured in his 2008 film Dasavathaaram for Sabaash Naidu,[13] while the Hindi version is titled as Sabaash Kundu. Haasan's younger daughter Akshara Haasan joined the team as an assistant director.[14] The team left for Los Angeles on May 24 for the first schedule.[15][16] In June 2016, Kamal Haasan replaced T. K. Rajeev Kumar as director due to the latter's ill health.[10] On July 13 Haasan slipped and fell from the stairs at his Chennai office, fracturing his right leg, underwent surgery at Apollo Hospitals,[17][18][19] and was discharged on August 5.[20]

Cast and crew

Haasan signed his older daughter Shruti Haasan along with Ramya Krishnan and Anant Mahadevan for the film. Brahmanandam has been signed to portray the role of his aide in Tamil and Telugu versions, while actor Saurabh Shukla will play the same role in the Hindi version.[15][16] Music is scored by Ilaiyaraaja, who is working with Haasan after 11 years.[21][22]

Filming

The major location for Sabaash Naidu is Los Angeles and other parts of USA.[15][16] A song was picturised on Shruthi Haasan, choreopraphed by Jamal Sims of Step Up film series.[23][24]
