Royal High School (RHS) is one of three public high schools in Simi Valley, California. Royal is part of the Simi Valley Unified School District and is located on Simi Valley's west side.
Royal High School is a California Distinguished School and the recipient of a Digital High School Technology Grant. It provides numerous courses of study and offers many of the Advanced Placement classes sponsored by the College Board including AP English, Statistics, Physics, Calculus AB and BC, Computer Science, Studio Art, World and U.S. History, Spanish, French, Government, Economics, Chemistry, and Biology as well as many Honors courses. It also offers ROP (work experience) programs and numerous performing, visual, and technical arts. Students may take classes in piano, photography, video production, broadcasting, music (choir and band), dance, stagecraft, web design, drama, graphics design, or drawing/painting.
History
Royal opened in 1968 but did not have a graduating class until 1970, because the class of 1969 was not divided up and remained at Simi Valley High School. Royal opened up with only sophomores and juniors. Freshmen, at that time, were part of the junior high system.
Academics
Royal High School has a partnership with the Reagan Library. Students may earn a diploma seal by completing a community service project, taking an AP Social Science class, and being involved in school governance. Students often are involved in events at the Reagan Library. Events including meeting with Senators, Governors, and other government officials. Royal High School has one of the few IB programs in the region. Royal High School is the only school with an Air Force JROTC program in the area.[2]
Athletics
Royal High School offers a variety of sports. Royal High school is most widely known for their prestigious Boys Soccer, Girls Water Polo, Boys Water Polo, Boys Volleyball, Cross Country, and Wrestling teams which have won the Marmonte League Championships and have been finalist in the California State Championships numerous times. Royal has recently added Boys Lacrosse and Girls Lacrosse.
Royal's school colors are hunter green and gold.
Boys' soccer
The Royal High School Boys soccer team has won 17 league titles and 3 CIF Southern Section titles in the program's 40 year history.
Girls Water Polo
Royal Girls Water Polo have won CIF the last two years. Many of the students are recruited by universities to play.
Baseball
The Royal High School Baseball team has won the Marmonte League championships in 1971, 1992, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2005 and 2010.
Football
The two main high schools, Royal and Simi Valley, are rivals, leading to large turnouts for their yearly "Simi-Royal" football game.
Boys' volleyball
Royal Boys' Volleyball has won league championships from 1989–2002 and in both 2008 and 2009. It has also won CIF Championships in 1989, 90, 92, and 94. The program has also been runners-up 9 times in CIF.
Wrestling
Royal Wrestling has won league championships in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1993, and 2004-2011. They were CIF Division 5 Dual meet Champions twice in a row in 2005 and 2006, and they were Division 2 CIF semi-finalists in 2007, 2008, 2009, and finalists in 2010. They have a 4 year dual meet record of 58-5 as of the season ending in 2008. Royal wrestling has been one of the top teams in Ventura County. The wrestling team has now accomplished a Marmonte League first, as their varsity won league for the eighth time in a row in 2011.
Cross country
The Royal Cross Country Team is known for becoming the CIF Championships 5 years in a row. The girls team has won 2 Marmonte League Championships in the past 30 years.
