Revels is the annual culfest (cultural festival) of Manipal Institute of Technology, a constituent college of Manipal University, held in the even semester of every academic year, i.e. the second semester of the year, in or around the month of March.

Introduction

It is a national level cultural and sports festival. Students from colleges all over the nation participate in various competitions held in the span of four days. Revels garners vast participation from over 100 colleges in India whose representatives participate in a large number of sports matches, drama competitions, street plays, concerts, battle of the bands, dance & music competitions, fashion shows and much more. It is wholly organised and run by the enthusiastic students of MIT(Manipal) itself, with a base budget provided by the college and the rest raised by the work of a dedicated Sponsorship team set up solely for the fest consisting of dedicated students of MIT(Manipal) itself. Revels 2014 attracted considerable amount of outstation participation as well as media attention.They have also launched their fest in 2015 with a social cause i.e S.A.H.I.L contributing their support in women empowerment.

Organisation

Students arrange themselves into various teams, clubs and organisations through rigorous courses of interviews and tests. The broad categories are for : Sponsorship, Publicity,Social Media and Outstation publicity, Informals, Hospitality, Pro-show, Vigilance, etc. With special dedicated clubs/ organisations hosting their own events linked to their fields, for example: The MIT clubs M.A.F.I.A. (The Music and Fine Arts Club) and L&D (The Literary and Debate Club) host all the art, dance, music and cultural; and literary, elocution and debate events and competitions respectively and MIT Sports Club organize the sporting events, categories and matches. While The Photography Club, Manipal organizes photography competitions and the photography exhibition.

The hierarchy is such: at the apex is the Student Council and the 'Convenors', under them but fairly independent come the Category Heads, one each for each Category and Sub-Category (e.g.: Publicity, Music, Theatre), under them are Co-Category Heads, Event Heads, Organisers, and finally Volunteers, with seniority, work experience and capabilities being the basis of selection. Volunteers are selected solely from the first year and Category Heads and Convenors from the third year.

Events

There are a minimum of 80 competitions and events with each coming under a particular category. 2015 saw the biggest turn out and number of competitions in: Eastern Vocals, Eastern Group Dance, Western Vocals, Battle of the Bands, Face Painting, Step Up (Street Dancing Competition), Group Dances, Fashion Show, T-Shirt Painting, Prop-It-Up (Impromptu dance with surprise props), 'Jugaad' (instrument competition where we saw 'instruments' ranging from buckets and plates to bicycles and beatboxing), Open Art, etc. - all organised, implemented and hosted by the Music and Fine Arts Club (M.A.F.I.A).

Solo acting, Street Play, Stand Up Comedy, Short Skit, etc. were hosted and organised by AAINA, Ada and Dramanon.

From 2013 onwards, sports have also been added to the fest and include vast participation. Matches are held for Football, Hockey, Cricket, Basketball, Tennis, Badminton, etc. with both Girls' as well as Boys' teams.

Participation

The 2012 Revels drew an estimated 4000 students from 25 colleges.[6] In 2013, 2,500 participants were present along with 1,500 for the sporting events.[7] In 2014, 3000 participants were present for sports and 1500 for cultural events.
