Pec pod Sněžkou (Czech pronunciation: [ˈpɛts ˈpotsɲɛʃkou̯]; German: Petzer, Polish: Pec pod Śnieżką) is a small town at the base of the highest Czech mountain Sněžka, in the Krkonoše Mountains of the Czech Republic. From the Pec pod Sněžkou leads a two-sectional cable car system to the top of Sněžka. The ski resort at Pec pod Sněžkou is one of the most well-known mountain resorts in the Czech Republic.

The oldest settlements in the area is documented by mining village "Obří důl", where the first record of mining accurated in 1511. In the mines were mined mainly copper ore and arsenopyrite. Last mining was here in 1959, when it was finally completed after nearly 450 years.

Village Pec pod Sněžkou was founded in the 16th century, when it was one of three parts of Velká Úpa. This was the result of extensive logging and felling of forests in the area. The first written mention of village Pec pod Sněžkou is from 1790.

Old chairlift from 1949 to the top of Sněžka was replaced by a new cable car system. Since February 2014, the four-person cabins in two sections export up to 250 visitors per hour on the peak.[1]

Ski resort

The ski resort located two hours of driving from the capital is one of the most well-known and most frequented mountain resorts in the Czech Republic. Pec pod Sněžkou provides modern chairlift, 10 surface ski lifts with the transport capacity of 9,620 persons per hour, jagged freestyle park, the longest and best-lighted slope for evening skiing, 900 metres long bobsleigh track, a snow tubing ice channel and a number of cross-country skiing routes. It is now included in SkiResort Černá hora - Pec, which forms the largest Czech ski resort.[2]
