Peter Joseph Weatherson (born 29 May 1980) is an English footballer who is co-player-manager of Shettleston in the Scottish Junior Football Association, West Region.

Weatherson started his senior career with Dumfries side Queen of the South, after initially playing with local side Newcastle Blue Star. He then played for Greenock Morton in the Scottish Football League First Division, and was also a coach of one of the club's youth teams. He moved on to a similar role at Annan Athletic in 2013.

Career

Early years

Born in North Shields, Weatherson began his career with local non-league club Newcastle Blue Star.[2]

Queen of the South

In 2000 Dumfries club Queen of the South brought Weatherson into the Scottish Football League[3] where he mainly featured as a centre forward but occasionally on the right of midfield. In season 2001/02 Weatherson scored 15 league goals in 33 appearances (4 as a substitute) as the Palmerston Park side won the Scottish Football League Second Division league championship. Under the captaincy of Jim Thomson the title was clinched with a 3–0 victory at Forfar Athletic on 20 April 2002. Weatherson hit the first two Queens goals and the third came from Sean O'Connor.

At the end of season 2002/03, Partick Thistle made an offer of £10,000 to QOS for Weatherson,[4] this however was deemed "derisory" and was dismissed out-of-hand thus allowing Morton to come in with a higher bid which was later accepted by Queens.

Greenock Morton

Greenock Morton paid £30,000 to attain Weatherson's services from Queens at the start of season 2003–2004.[2] He scored 14 league goals in 31 appearances that season (20 goals from 37 appearances in all competitions) but the campaign ended in disaster when Morton finished in 4th position after leading the division by a significant margin. Allegations of betting irregularities and persistent misuse of alcohol before matches were made against some of the players in the squad, including Weatherson who was thought to be the ringleader.

He overcame this setback and has recently remodelled himself as a defender, after manager Jim McInally used him as a utility centre-back in a 7–1 Tennent's Scottish Cup victory away to Cove Rangers.[5] Weatherson played as a converted right back for Morton in season 2006–2007; from where he still contributed his fair share of goals, but as of 6 October 2007, when he scored a hat trick against Partick Thistle while playing as a striker, Jim McInally has ensured the Morton support that Weatherson would continue to play in a striker's role.

On 10 March 2007, Peter Weatherson scored his 100th career goal in a 3–0 victory against Alloa Athletic at Recreation Park, Alloa.[6] Weatherson recently became the club's top scorer for season 2006–2007, when he scored 4 goals during a 9–1 home victory against Forfar Athletic,[7] bringing his season's tally to 17 goals (of which 15 of them he was playing in defence, and 2 from midfield).

Weatherson finished 4 of his first 7 seasons at Cappielow as top goalscorer. The seasons where he did not where: 2005–2006 where he finished second behind returning fans favourite Derek Lilley, 2008–2009 where he was second behind Brian Wake, and 2010–11 when he was third behind Brian Graham and Allan Jenkins.

He is currently the clubs joint fourth top post war league goalscorer. (See the table on the club page)

Upon scoring the first of his brace against QoS on 8 November 2008, he reached the milestone of 100 league goals in the Scottish Football League having scored 38 for QoS and having scored his 62nd for Morton.[8]

In January 2010, Weatherson signed a new two-year deal (after rejecting advances from Partick Thistle[9]), tying to the club until 2012. He was also granted a testimonial, to take place upon the completion of the contract.[10]

Against Queen of the South, in a match at Cappielow on 16 October 2010, Weatherson scored his 100th and 101st goals (in all competitions) for Morton.

In May 2012, Weatherson received another one-year contract which will culminate in his testimonial[11] against St Johnstone.[12]

After the conclusion of his testimonial year, Weatherson was released in May 2013,[13] after scoring 121 goals in all competitions for Morton.

Annan Athletic

Towards the end of May, Weatherson signed for Annan Athletic.[14] Despite having already signed for Annan, Weatherson was granted his testimonial against St Johnstone, to be played 13 July 2013.[15] On 27 July 2013, Weatherson scored against former employees Greenock Morton as Annan won 1–0 and knocked them out of the Scottish Challenge Cup.

In May 2015, Weatherson was announced as having been kept on by Annan for the 2015–16 season.[16]

Shettleston Juniors

Weatherson was announced as the new co-player-manager of Shettleston Juniors in March 2016 along with Ryan McStay, and assumed the role at the end of the 2015–16 season.[17][18]
