Periya Karuppu Thevar

Periya Karuppu Thevar was a Tamil film character artiste and folk singer who appeared in Tamil-language films. He was referred as PKT by his friends in the film industry.^[1]

Film career

PKT was part of the hugely popular drama troupe floated by veteran Sankaradoss Swamigal more than fifty years ago. Like many actors of his era, he had made the grade to films as an actor after toiling hard on stage where he used to be quite popular for his acting as well as in signing many folk songs.

His career in films has spanned many decades wherein he had starred in more than 200 films including a memorable role in Bharathiraaja’s Mann Vasanai and in Gangai Amaren’s Karagattakkaran which had memorable songs by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja. PKT had also song a hugely popular song in Kamal Haasan’s Virumandi a few years back.

He has four sons Virumandi eldest son working in film industry as co-Director to director selva and character artist in couple of films like naanga and mathayaanaikootam .Karthick second son is an art assistant in film industry,third son Palpandi working in anand cine service as nagra player.Youngest son Gopal is also working in film industry. PKT’s wife Annamayil is living in Karumathur, Madurai now.^[1]

Death

He died on 10 September 2012 and was survived by his four sons. He had suffered a massive cardiac arrest at his Saligramam residence and died in hospital.^[1]
