Penney High School is the public high school in Hamilton, Missouri.[1] Prominent citizens from the town include department store mogul J. C. Penney, for whom the school is named, and Jenny Doan who since 2008 has turned her quilting method into a multimillion-dollar business centered in the town.[1]

Academics

The year 2016 marked the third in a row when Penney High School was recognized by US News and World Report as a Bronze medal school.[2] Students can earn up to 31 hours of college credit through dual credit offerings. Penney High has an active chapter of the Future Farmers of America organization, and offers other co-curriculars such as Future Business Leaders of America.[3][4]

Sports

Penney High School is a member of the Kansas City Interscholastic Conference for athletics and music. The girls track and field team won State championships for five years running, from 2007 through 2011, and was runner up in 2014 and 2015; five other times it placed within the top nine. Girls basketball has also done well at State, with 2A championships over Canton R-5 in 1977 and over Westran in 2008. They finished 3rd in 1978 and 4th in 1979.[5] Also in State play, the girls placed in basketball (3rd in 1978 and 4th in 1979) and in softball (3td in 2012).

The boys won the Class 1A Missouri state high school football championship in 2009 with an undefeated season and a 21-17 victory over Valle Catholic High School in the finals. The next year the football team defeated Maplewood Richmond Heights High School for the 2A championship, and in 2012 again won the 1A title. The 2010 victory made it the first team in Missouri history to win back-to-back championships despite moving up a class.[6][7] In 2015 it was runner up in class 1A. The boys basketball team placed 3rd in 1981. The track and field team placed in the top nine statewide six times in class 1A. The boys placed 8th in golf in 2014. Several businesses in town fly the flag of the hornets and the hornet is painted on sidewalks throughout the town.

Kellen Overstreet, star football player at Penney High, was named to the 2015 Parade All-American First Team.[8] His 70 touchdowns in 2014 set a Missouri state single-season record, and fell just one short of the national record. His 4,259 rushing yards was the fourth best all-time single-season total in national high school football history.[9]
