Parama Island Flyover
Ma Flyover (officially Parama Island Flyover[1]) is an under-construction 4.5-kilometre-long flyover in Kolkata. It is built along Park Circus Connector and would connect E.M. Bypass with Park Circus 7-point crossing. A ramp of the flyover is slated to connect with the existing AJC Bose Road Flyover, which will virtually help in making a seamless, no-signal traffic corridor from EM Bypass to Alipore. The total length of the flyover, including the ramps, is 9.2 km. The flyover started its construction in February 2010. The project had an original deadline of August 2012, and the deadline was extended multiple time.[2]After a huge cost-overrun and delays, the major flank was opened on 09 October 2015 at a cost of ₹ 460-crores.[3][4][5] A 450-meter flank of the flyover, which would directly connect the flyover with AJC Bose Road Flyover is expected to open in July 2016.[6] Barring a stretch of 684.31-meters constructed by Larsen & Tubro, the flyover was constructed by Hindustan Construction Company.[6]
Route timings and restrictions
The flyover which was opened without completion of the flank connecting AJC Bose Road flyover, resulted in massive traffic jams after initial inauguration. With the pressure mounting Kolkata Police was forced to temporarily shut down the flyover for few hours.[7] After initial discussion, Kolkata Police devised a solution allowing only one-way traffic (during certain time of the day) as an interim solution till the other flank is complete. [8][9]
Timings from 27th October 2015.[10]
- 9 AM to 9 PM - Towards EM Bypass only.
- From 9 pm to 9 am - both ways open.
The flyover is also closed for heavy vehicles including buses and trucks, auto-rickshaws and pedestrian traffic.[11]
