Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Greek: Παναγιώτης Ταχτσίδης; born 15 February 1991) is a Greek professional footballer who plays for Cagliari on loan from Torino and the Greek national team as a midfielder.

Club career

AEK Athens

Tachtsidis was scouted by Toni Savevski, the head of AEK Athens's youth academy at the time, and signed his first professional contract with AEK on 1 November 2007.[1] Shortly after signing his first professional contract, Tachtsidis made his debut for AEK in the Greek Cup against Fostiras. On 27 January 2009, he became the youngest player to have ever played for AEK in the Greek League when he played against Thrasyvoulos, being 16 years and 348 days old; that record, however, has since been surpassed by Taxiarchis Fountas, also for AEK. Against Thrasyvoulos, Tachtsidis scored the winning goal in the 92nd minute to give his team the three points.[2]

Genoa

On 21 April 2010, Tachtsidis completed a move to Genoa that had already been previously agreed upon in January 2010.[3]

Cesena (loan)

While at Genoa, he joined Cesena on loan for a year in August 2010, with an option to buy half of the registration rights.[4][5] He then headed to Grosseto on loan until the end of the season in February 2011.

Verona (loan)

Tachtsidis went on a third loan spell to Verona for the 2011–12 season.[6] His stay at the club turned out very successful, playing in most of Verona's games and helping the club to reach the play-offs for promotion to the Serie A, which they failed to reach.

Roma

On 19 July 2012, Tachtsidis signed a five-year contract with Roma for a fee of €2.5 million in co-ownership deal (€1.5 million plus 50% registration rights of Andrea Bertolacci).[7] He managed to score one goal in 21 appearances for Roma in Serie A for the 2012–13 season.

On 20 June 2013, Roma signed Mattia Destro outright for a pre-agreed figure of €4.5 million. Giammario Piscitella and Valerio Verre, who were sent to Genoa as part of the Destro loan deal, returned to Roma for €4 million in total (having cost Genoa €3 million in 2012). As part of this complex deal, Tachtsidis returned to Genoa for €3 million.[8]

Catania

On 20 June 2013, it was announced that Tachtsidis had returned to Genoa,[9] however, less than a month later he was sold in a co-ownership deal to Calcio Catania in exchange for the co-ownership of Francesco Lodi.[10][11] 50% registration rights of Tachtsidis and Lodi both valued for €3 million, matching the bought back fee Genoa paid to Roma.[12]

Torino (loan)

On 9 January 2014 he transferred to Torino on loan for the rest of the season. [13] The Granata had been looking to strengthen their midfield options.[14][15][16]

He made his first appearance on 19 January 2014 in a 2-0 away win against U.S. Sassuolo Calcio and he scored his first goal for the club in a 3-3 away draw against Lazio. In June 2014 Tachtsidis and Lodi returned to Genoa and Catania respectively.[17]

Second spell to Genoa

Tachtsidis spent half of the 2013-14 Serie A season on loan at Torino but, after [18] Genoa decided to buy back his full registration from Sicilian club Catania while allowing Francesco Lodi to return to relegated Catania.[19][20]

Return to Verona

After the deal, Tachtsidis completed a move from Genoa to Verona on 18 July 2014. He arrived in Verona on loan with a buyout option at the end of the season.[21][22][23] Now the Rossoblu have in turn sent Tachtsidis out to Hellas Verona on loan, a club he already represented in 2011-12. At the end of the season, there had been reports of a move to Cagliari Calcio, where he would’ve reunited with ex-Roma Coach Zdenek Zeman.[24] After the 2014-15 Serie A season, Tachtsidis returned to Genoa. On 30 June 2015 the Gryphon asked for a reported €2.5 million for a possible transfer fee to Verona, while Verona would prefer to extend the loan for a further season.[25]

Return to Genoa

Tachtsidis finally made his Serie A debut for Genoa on 23 August 2015 away to Palermo as a 68th minute replacement for Diego Capel. Although owned by Genoa since 2010 Panagiotis Tachtsidis had been loaned out on seven occasions to other Italian clubs prior to his first league appearance.[26]

On 18 October 2015, with a hundred seconds left in the siege of Chievo Tachtsidis placed at the corner of the post to the right of Albano Bizzarri after a solo run of Olivier Ntcham, scored the winning goal, that gives the Griffon a 3-2 winning thriller playing with 10 men for the final 35 minutes. This was the first goal of Tachtsidis with the club in all competitions. [27] [28]

On 28 October 2015, Torino F.C. and Genoa played out an enthralling 3-3 draw in Turin, whereas Torino’s late-game pressure paid off in the 89th minute, in the most bizarre of fashions. Substitute Bruno Peres sent in a cross from the right which was met by the head of Marco Benassi. Mattia Perin made the original save and then attempted to punch clear, his punch hitting the leg of Panagiotis Tachtsidis before agonizingly rolling into the corner for the goal, giving the lead to Granata, before the final equalizer.[29] On 10 January 2016, Tuttosport has revealed that Torino F.C. are closing in on the signing of Tachtsidis to replace Alessandro Gazzi who’s heading to Serie B side Cagliari Calcio. [30] On 20 April 2016, in his 150th game in Italy he gave the assist to Sebastian De Maio who scored in a 1-0 home win against Inter Milan. [31] On 2 May 2016, Tachtsidis, Roma's former midfielder, equalised in the 2-3 home loss for Serie A. when he steered in a sharp low cross from the left.[32]

Second spell to Torino

On 5 August 2016, Tachtsidis after spending half of the 2013-14 Serie A season on loan at Torino, he signed a signed a three-season contract with "Granata" for a fee of reported €1.3 million. [33] [34]

Cagliari (loan)

Immediately after the signing of his contract with Torino, Cagliari signed Tachtsidis in a temporary deal [35] and the Greek international was confident for the abilities of the club and his. [36] After the first two months in the club, Tachtsidis has proved one of the most well-chosen purchases. In 2016-17 season games against Atalanta, Sampdoria and Crotone, Tachtsidis has gone in crescendo, with three more than positive performances. An obscure job done with much running and muscle in midfield, but also some chipping which allowed him to show up menacingly by the opponent. [37]

International career

Tachtsidis exceptional season year with both Calcio Catania and Torino was his passport not only to be called from Greek national manager Fernando Santos to the 30 man provisional World Cup squad, but also to the final 23-man squad for 2014 FIFA World Cup.[38]

On March 30, 2015 Panagiotis Tachtsidis and Vangelis Moras as well Giannis Fetfatzidis have been involved in a car crash.The three Greek internationals were travelling by taxi to Budapest Airport in Hungary, following a Euro 2016 qualifier. One person was killed in the collision, but the Greek Federation has released a statement confirming that the three players were not seriously injured. Three other people were seriously injured in the crash, and are being monitored in hospital.[39] On 11 October 2015, he scored his first goal with Greece in a 4-3 home win against Hungary when he lashed in a powerful shot. [40]

Style of Play

Panagiotis Tachtsidis is a particular type of player that needs to be accommodated into a specific system. Without being particularly athletic, the Greek international more than makes up for this with an exceptional range of passing.[41]
