Outwood Academy Brumby (formerly Brumby Comprehensive School and Brumby Engineering College), is a coeducational secondary school with academy status, located at Cemetery Road, near the A18 in Scunthorpe (Brumby), North Lincolnshire, England.

Outwood Academy Brumby has adopted the North Lincolnshire Council Admissions Policy.[1]

History

The school name does not, in fact, have anything to do with Australian wild horses. It is named after Brumby village, now a suburb of Scunthorpe: the place-name is of Viking origin, derived from the personal name 'Bruni' and the Old Danish word 'by', meaning village or farmstead (Cameron,K., 1998, A Dictionary of Lincolnshire Place-Names).

The school was opened in 1929 as Brumby Senior Boys School. In 1930, girls joined the school for one year before moving to Ashby Girls Secondary Modern School. It became Brumby Comprehensive School in 1968, while education in Scunthorpe was being reorganised. At that time, Stanley Chapman was the headteacher and Herbert Jessop was the Deputy Head. It was also in 1968 that girls were admitted permanently to the school with the inclusion of the first woman co-Deputy Head, Mary Shannon.

In 2002 the school's name was changed to the Brumby School. Since September 2005 it has been a specialist Engineering College, and a new engineering centre was opened in 2007.

After failing an Ofsted inspection in December 2011 it was announced that the school would become an academy. As part of becoming an academy, a new headteacher and a number of teachers would be recruited increasing the number of staff, and a new school uniform would be created. The school achieved Grade 2 ('good') status, according to an Ofsted monitoring visit in December 2012. During its third monitoring visit in March 2013, the school was pronounced as appropriate to become an academy under the sponsorship of Outwood Grange Academy, an academy in Wakefield. Brumby School was renamed Outwood Academy Brumby in April 2013. The academy will be re-evaluated in December 2014.

Currently, the academy remains a co-ed institution for ages 11 to 16 (years 7 to 11). The current principal is Pam Buckingham, who was appointed in September 2012 when the previous headmaster, Dr. Clark, retired after eighteen years.

In July 2015, Pam Buckingham announced her retirement, so therefore, the principal's position would be taken by vice-principal Toby Rutter, starting from September.

Academic performance

Brumby used to score the lowest in GCSEs in North Lincolnshire,[2] well below the England average. There are no A-level results because schools in Scunthorpe do not teach to sixth-form level: since the introduction of comprehensive education in Scunthorpe in 1968, sixth-form studies take place at the John Leggott College. There has been improvement since the college became an academy.
