Oscar Lukefahr
Father Oscar Lukefahr, C.M. (July 20, 1939 – August 10, 2015) was an American Catholic priest, theologian, writer, and Christian apologist.[1] He is best known as the author of many introductory books and tracts on the subject of Catholicism, operating the Catholic Home Study Service from the Archdiocese of St. Louis. This service distributes free Catholic literature to thousands of RCIA students each year.
Lukefar is the nephew of Father Oscar Huber who administered last rites to President John F. Kennedy and consoled First Lady Jackie Kennedy after the president's assaination in 1963. Lukefar followed his uncle's footsteps in becoming a Vincentian and a devout supporter of the Knights of Columbus. Father Lukefahr died Aug. 10 2015 at the Apostle of Charity Residence in Perryville. He was 76 and a Vincentian for 53 years.[1][2]
Biography
Father Lukefahr was born on July 20, 1939 in Perryville MO.[1] He attended elementary school at St. Vincent in Perryville and secondary school at St. Vincent's College in Cape Girardeau. He entered the seminary in 1957 and professed vows May 31, 1962. He was ordained May 28, 1966.
Father Lukefahr earned master's degrees in Latin from DePaul University in 1968 and counseling from Southeast Missouri State University in 1972.
He taught in Cape Girardeau and in Texas until 1972, when he began parish ministry in Cape Girardeau. He also served in Denver, Co., and Benton, Mo.
In 1991, Father Lukefahr became director of Catholic Home Study Service based in Perryville, where he wrote eight books on Catholicism published by Liguori and used by Catholics across the country to deepen their faith.
Father Lukefahr also served as spiritual director of the Association of the Miraculous Medal for the past three years.
