Nicolas "Nico" LaHood is the Criminal District Attorney of Bexar County, Texas. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
Early life and education
Nicholas Anthony LaHood was born on September 16, 1972 to Judge Michael Thomas LaHood, Sr. and Norma Olivia (née Mendiola)[1] in San Antonio, Texas.[2] His father, an attorney of over 40 years and later a District Judge, was born in 1937 to first generation immigrants from Lebanon. His mother, Norma grew up in a Hispanic household where she later attended Harlandale High School. Together they had three children, Michael LaHood Jr., Nicholas LaHood, and Marc LaHood. LaHood attended Mount Sacred Heart Catholic school for 10 years (M-8). Then going on to Central Catholic High School. He later attended St. Mary’s University, graduating with a financial degree before going to St. Mary’s Law School for his doctorate in Jurisprudence. After this, he began his career as an attorney in San Antonio.
LaHood was arrested in June 1994 for attempting to sell 200 Ecstasy pills worth $3,600, with a firearm to an undercover police officer. At the time of his arrest, he was in his third year at San Antonio College and working at a nightclub. He entered a plea bargain with District Judge Sid Harle in August 1994 and was given deferred adjudication, a probated $1,000 fine and ordered to perform 320 hours of community service.[3]
Career
LaHood ran for District Attorney in 2010 but narrowly lost to Susan Reed. Controversies that contributed to his loss included his age and criminal record. After the election, LaHood had already decided to run again in 2014. In the 2014 Democratic Primaries for the District Attorney Race, LaHood faced off against Therese Huntzinger. LaHood narrowly beat his opponent: LaHood received 20,413 votes, just 47 more than Huntzinger's 20,366. In the 2014 Election for District Attorney, LaHood defeated Susan Reed, the incumbent. LaHood was sworn in as the new DA on January 1, 2015.[4]
Personal life
He married Davida Gil on July 8, 2006. They have four children together; Michael, Maya, Leah, and Zaiter.
On August 14, 1996, LaHood's brother, Michael LaHood, Jr.[5] was murdered in the driveway of his parents house after a gang related failed carjacking. The perpetrators, Kenneth Foster and three other men, were later caught and tried. Foster and Mauriceo Mashawn Brown were tried for capital murder and, in May 1997, were sentenced to death. In July 2006, Mauriceo Brown was executed for the crime by lethal injection.[6]
LaHood believes that vaccines "can and do cause autism".[7][8]
