New England Coffee is New England’s largest independent specialty coffee roaster.[1] Founded in 1916[2] by Menelaos Kaloyanides, George Kaloyanides and Megaklis Papadopoulos in Boston, Massachusetts. The business was acquired by New Orleans based Reily Foods Company on December 30, 2013.[3]
New England Coffee was voted Massachusetts family business of the year in 2007.[4]
History
Three Greek immigrants by the names of brothers Menelaos & George Kaloyanides, and their partner Megaklis Papadopoulos started the company New England Coffee in a building at the corner of Milk and Broad Streets in Boston, where hand-roasted coffee was delivered by horse and wagon. The first truck was purchased in 1918, when other family members started to join the business.
In 1966, after outgrowing several homes in succession, New England Coffee finally settled into their present location at 100 Charles Street in Malden, Massachusetts. Today, New England Coffee occupies five buildings and has hugely expanded their manufacturing and packaging capabilities.
New England Coffee only uses 100% Arabica beans in all of their products. New England Coffee offers coffee blends, flavored coffees, full-bodied dark roasts and blends from locations such as Colombia, Sumatra and Costa Rica. Among the most pervasive varieties are Decaffeinated Colombian and Colombian Supremo which have both been reviewed by Consumer Reports.[5]
