Around the movie

The movie was commercially successful. The movie created box office record of all time.[7]

The movie is a remake of 1949 M. K. Radha movie Apoorva Sagodharargal. The role of M. K. Radha was enacted by MGR and Banumathi's role by J. Jayalalitha. The movie is remade in Hindi in 1972 as Gora Aur Kala with Rajendra Kumar. This movie is inspired by the French novel, The Corsican Brothers / Les Frères corses of Alexandre Dumas Père, published in 1845.

In the credits of the beginning, MGR is presented, for the first time, with Pon Manai Tchémal 's title (given by Kirupanandha Variyar), before that of Puraitchy Nadhigar (given by Karunanidhi). The clothes of MGR are drawn one more time splendidly by the dressmaker M.A. Muthu. Puraitchy Thalaivar screens them very well.

The difference of the complexion of the skin of the brothers is not harmless because it makes a reference to the politics, to the flag of the D.M.K. (Black, in Tamil language கருப்பு and red, in Tamil language சிவப்பு), proceeded already used for another MGR of 1968, KUDIYIRUNDHA KOYIL.
