Mountainview Elementary is an elementary school located in the city of Santa Clarita, California, United States. It is managed by the Saugus Union School District and educates in grades K-6.
History
Mountainview cost $5.1 million to build.[1] It was opened in April 1996 under the direction of founding principal, Kathy Wolfson. Wolfson left Mountainview on December 2005, on retirement. Christine Hamlin replaced Kathy Wolfson as principal on January 9, 2005. In June 10, 2011, a new principal, Mrs. Demsher from Bridgeport Elementary went to Mountainview because Christine Hamlin got promoted. The current vice principal is Dr. Vahooney.
School organization
The school's mascot is the mountain lion.[1] Mountainview values are Integrity, Commitment,Compassion, Learning, Creativity, Innovation.[2] In 2007-08 there were 1,026 students, two thirds of whom were white, and a fifth were Hispanic.[3]
Children start their education in the Mountainview Fun for Fours, that is funded by Los Angeles Universal Preschool.[4] The preschool is oversubscribed and parents take part in a lottery to secure places.[5] Sixth graders from Mountainview move onto the Rio Norte Junior High School and Arroyo Seco Junior High School
Accomplishments
Mountainview Elementary was awarded the status of Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 2004.[6][7] This is the highest award that a US school can achieve.[8][9] In 2005, the school attained a 100% success rate in the standardised reading tests.[10] Mountainview has many in-school organizations including their Student Service, Circle of Friends (disabled care) and a custom leadership program. Students participating in the program received Santa Clarita approved awards.
