Senator-in-waiting
Shaikh was a Progressive Conservative candidate in the 2012 Alberta Senate nominee election for one of three "Senator-in-Waiting" positions. He received 308,339 votes and secured the third and final available position. Due to the requirement that Senators retire upon reaching the age of 75 there will be at least three Senate vacancies from Alberta during Shaikh's eight-year term. The third vacancy is expected to occur following the projected retirement of Betty Unger on August 8, 2018. Whether or not Shaikh is appointed depends on whether the federal government in office at that time is willing to honour the results of Alberta's non-binding election as appointments to the Senate are the prerogative of the Prime Minister of Canada. The former Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, had pledged to appoint Alberta nominees to vacant positions.
