Michael Hibberd (born 3 January 1990) is an Australian rules footballer with the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He previously played for the Essendon Football Club from 2011 to 2016.

Hibberd comes from the small town of Somerville on the Mornington Peninsula.[1] He spent two-years playing for Frankston in the Victorian Football League (VFL) before being drafted. He came fifth in the seniors best and fairest award in his first year at the club and in the same season, he was awarded the best first year player award. In his second year at the club, his season was rewarded with the senior best and fairest award and the Fothergill-Round Medal in 2010 as the VFL's most promising young player.[2]

Hibberd was drafted by Essendon with their only selection and fourth overall in the 2011 pre-season draft[3] and made his debut in round 6, 2011 against Gold Coast at Etihad Stadium, in the match which Essendon won by 139 points.

In September 2011, Hibberd pleaded guilty to assault charges in relation to a late night fight that occurred in Mornington in July 2011. He escaped conviction, but received a $2500 fine and was suspended for the remainder of the season by Essendon for a drunken attack in which he knocked a man out.[4]

In January 2016, Hibberd was named as one of 34 past and present Essendon players found guilty over their use of illegal supplements during the 2012 AFL season. As a result, Hibberd was suspended for twelve months, effective from November 2015, which meant he missed the entire 2016 AFL season.[5] After speculation surrounding whether he would return to Essendon once his suspension was finished,[6] he confirmed in August that he wanted to be traded to another club for a "fresh start"[7] and he nominated Melbourne as his preferred destination in September.[8] He was officially traded to Melbourne in October.[9]
